G35, one of 10 best...again
Just got the new Car and Driver and the G35 Coupe/Sedan were selected to be one of their 10 best models of the year for the second year in a row. The direct competeing BMW 3 series was also selected. Although the 350Z made the list last year, it didn't make the cut this year.

Read on Freshalloy that the TL had some handling issues (understeer??).. don't think the timing had got anything to do, auto-journalists have been test driving it for quite a while now..
Re: G35, one of 10 best...again
This brings a smile to my face, not that I need any other reasons besides seeing the G in the garage
.
BTW, can someone please explain the term understeer in simple terms? I've heard the phrase a lot, but I don't quite understand it. I assume oversteer is just the opposite.

Understeer: the car does not steer enough to make the corner, therefore you have to keep adding steering (turning the wheel) to make the corner. aka: push - the front of the car pushes forward rather than turning.
Oversteer: the opposite, the rear of the car over-rotates and this requires less steering input. (think fishtail)
As someone (J. Stewart?) said: understeer allows you to see what you're going to hit, with oversteer it's behind you.

Since the BMW 3 and M3 shared a "slash" I would think that the G35 and 350z would be able to share a slash too. Besides the 350z should have beat out the RX-8 and the Ford Focus at a minimum.
Sometimes these types of ratings just make me wonder how much of this is politically based (i.e; biggest advertisers, American representation, award as many manufacturers as possible, etc...) and how much of this is truly based on merit. Their rating systems have a lot of subjective elements so there are opportunities to give different manufacturers a slight edge whenever they desire...

Understeer means that at the limit the front tires lose traction first. A lto of times understeer is referred to as push. That is, if you reach the limit of cornering grip in a corner the car wants to puch to the outside. Oversteer is when the rear tires lose traction first at the limit. Oversteering is sometimes referred to as loose since you can slide the rear end loosely around corners.
The way our coupes are set up from the factory, the are built to understeer at the limit. Strangely though the sedans are set to oversteer from the factory. This may be do a lot to the fact that the coupes have smaller tires in the front than in the rear. The sedans have the same all the way around, but they are narrower than both ends of the coupe. From the service loaner sedans I've had, they reach the limit a lot quicker than the coupes do.
To balance my coupe, I went a different direction than most. I first swapped the front 225/45s for 245/40s to even out the contact patch front and rear. Then I added sway bars setting the rear stiffer than the front. The car is now perfectly neutral, by this I mean I can now either get it to push or slide around corners by only using the gas at the limit.

Re: G35, one of 10 best...again
Sometimes I wonder how they arrive at these best 10 lists. I mean, the G35 sedan finished midpack in the last C&D comparison test with other near-luxury cars. How does it get on the best 10 when some of the cars ahead of it in that comparo did not?

Re: G35, one of 10 best...again
The M3 is simply a tuned version of the BMW 3 it shares the same badge..and the same series number.....3. Though the G35 is made by Nissan and shares many of the same parts as the Z, it does not share the same badge as the 350z....it is meant to be a completely different car sold at a completely different dealership.

Re: G35, one of 10 best...again
Thanks sracer for your simple explanation. It feels like our coupe oversteers, since my back gives out too easy.
Anyway, now back to the topic of this thread
