Could of bought used 91 porsche 928, bought G35-C

Last July I was going through a midlife crises at the age of 30 so I decided to purchase a sports "car" coupe. I budgeted around $50K, but really did not want to spent that much on a car, at that price range there was the Bmw M3, but I don't see any value in it and there were way too many 3 series fix-ups that immitated the M3s. The corvette was nice, but only a 2 seater and I really don't like to visit the gas station that often. So, I looked around in the classified and lord and behold my "Dream car" ever since I was a little kid, "THE PORSCHE 928 S4". At a local Lexus dealership they took in a 1991 Porsche 928S4 auto with only, get this 46,000 miles on it, also my favorite color combo Black on Black. They were only asking $20,888 for the car. I immediately called and gotten the vin number, so I check the history of this car with consumer report and to my delight it was only a 1 owner car. So, I call back again, and this saleman told me that only 1 other gentleman have called so I better hurry. By the way this was the first day that the classifcation were printed. Now, I live about 60 miles away from this dealership and I can only drive so fast in my 97 toyota 4runner limited. Well, to make a long story short, when I got there, I was just in time to see the other gentleman drive away in my dream car, damn it was awesome. It was based on first come first serve and he paid cash for it. The drive home was one of longest and saddest of my life. Well, now its 1 year later and I have purchase my 2003 G-coupe and believe it or not, it has fulfill my dream pretty darn well.

Happy motoring to all G-owners.

Like you, I remember when the Tony Lapine-designed 928 came out and thinking I had to own one some day. They're now depreciated to the point of being affordable for most people, but they are hideously expensive to maintain or fix, and that's if you can find a mechanic that was factory trained to do so. For this reason, Sports Car Market Magazine last year named it among the ten Porsches to avoid. Most 928 fanatics send their cars back to Zuffenhausen for major maintenance and overhauls. Considering that the G35 will outperform the 928 for a fraction of the expected repair bills, I'd say you lucked out.

I too was smitten with the 928. after I drove a few I was unimpressed. They are way to heavy for the size that they are. And like Rainmeister said, very expensive to maintain. I called around to a couple of local porsche repair shops and they said skip it and buy a 911 instead.

Re: Could of bought used 91 porsche 928, bought G35-C

I had a 1980 928 I bought used in '86. It was my daily driver for about 10 years and I sold it 2 years ago with almost 220k miles! It's amazing how similar the G coupe is to this car, and even more amazing is the job Porsche did designing that car in the mid-70's.

Since mine was an early 2V 4.5l V8, it only had about 230HP. The '91 you were considering would have 320HP and would outperform the G35 in several areas. The G is a great overall car with classic coupe looks, but the 928 definitely got more attention (if that's a factor for you). I did rack-up plenty of moving violations (over several DL's), probably on the order of 100 points (with an Escort)!

As far as maintenance, no doubt I spent alot keeping it on the road for that kind of mileage, but there were also several 25k virtually "maintenance free" mile stretches. The engine holds 8 quarts of oil, and I was doing twice annual (10k) Mobil 1 oil changes.

I really do miss my 928, but the G35 will have to do for now, until I save up enough for a 911!

At this point in time a 928 would be a good collector car, but not a good daily driver. Age takes its toll and repairs are very expensive on the 928 (as others have mentioned).
You also made the comment that you eliminated the Corvette due to its gas mileage. Sorry to tell you, but the G won't get any better mpg than the Corvette!
Anyway, of course I feel you made the right decision going with the G, so did I.

I always wanted a pre-98 911. I shopped a few last year.. Very complicated getting a clean one and having it checked out. I ended up falling for the G. I pass 911's now and have alot of admiration and respect for those cars, but I really dont want one anymore. The first time I felt that, I knew I had made the right choice.
