no, then you're just an average driver. most should be able to do this in a short period of time.

You must be better than some of the best drag racers in the world then, because they still use tachs and shift lights

6800.. it bothers the fck out of me, and i dont usually shift before 4k during daily driving...need that noise (i dont get how you guys put it at 4k or people who shift at 3k). i only get the light now when i accelerate hard out of lights and the like

Street cars are different than drag cars. Anyone driving a G35 should not need a shift light, ESPECIALLY in every day driving. Just watch the tach, doesnt take a master driver to not need a shift light. BTW he said he just got a shift light so i thought he meant he bought one. If so, i still dont understand why. If you cant drive your car without bouncing it off the redline, you shoulda gotten the AT.

i've only been driving stick for about 4 years and i don't have to sit there and read the tach the entire way but a quick glance or two never hurt anyone.

on another note this is one of the stupidest things to argue about ever. who cares if you have to look down and read the tach or use a shift light as long as you're driving well it doesn't matter IMO.... just my $0.02

Read what you said again, when drag racing you don't have time to look at the RPMs, thats exactly why a shift light is needed. Either you watch your tach and shift right before you hit redline, or you use a shiftlight to tell you when that point is. I never mentioned daily driving, of course its not needed then. I pointed out a specific case where where you need a VERY precise shift to rev as high as possible without hitting the revlimiter. I agree that anyone should be able to shift by the sound of the car without a tach during normal driving situations becuase the actual rpms isn't can vary a little without much difference in acceleration.

I'm just used to the car, so by the noise of the engine/exhaust I know when to shift. I imagine that's the case for most here, but for optimum gas mileage or when the car is cold, I shift around 3K. On average for daily driving, I shift around 3.5K - 4K.

I thought the whole point of the shift light is so that you don't redline it / hit the rev limiter, so why set it for the "daily driver" setting?

Just figure out how long it takes you to shift once you see the light and set it at an RPM so that you don't redline or hit the rev limiter.

I normally just shift by the sound of the car (exhaust) usally it turns about to be around 4k. I have the shift light set at 6800 for the aggressive driving times. It really depends on your driving habits and what you feel comfortable with. I agree with icab, set it for your agressive driving times not your daily driving.
