just got 20's feels like I lost some power

Re: just got 20's feels like I lost some power
Folks,
Almost but not quite. It is a square relationship- that is to say, when you move the weight out from the centre, say by increasing the diameter of the wheel (most of your wheel's weight is the rim, some spoke, some hub), the torque needed to rotate the wheel (force x length of the arm upon which it is levered) increases as a square relationship. So even if the wheels weighed the same, and even adding the new tires if they still weighed the same as the 18s, because the weight is further out from the centre, the engine would have a harder time rotating the bigger wheels. If you get a chance, take a base coupe 5AT with 17s for a spin back to back with a coupe 5AT with 18s (performance package). The base coupe is actually snappier off the line. I've tried it- the difference is obvious, just as the difference you are experiencing with the 20s is obvious. If you rear-wheel dyno the car, you'll find you've lost HP compared to the 18s. Your only consolation- cool looks. If the guy that sold you the 20s didn't tell you this before you bought the new set, he sucks.

My 20s vs. stock 18s
20" front 55 lb. vs. 18" 45 lb.
20" rear 65 lb. vs. 18" 50 lb.
All the weights are with tires. So total it up, switching it from 18" to 20" adds about 50 lb. more.

NOw you just increased the weight of your car. I am oretty sure that you have slowed down a good bit. You should of have gotten some alunium 18 to 19 then you would of have not lost so much exceleration power.. But you live and learn.

Its called unsprung weight. This is why big wheels are usually NOT an advantage.
Going with a larger wheel usually has 2 benefits (up to a certain point):
1) Less sidewall flex
2) Wider array of tires available
When you increase your rim HEIGHT, you should also be looking to increase your rim WIDTH. Since car companies are aware that people are starting to look at automotive style, things like lighting (LED/HID) and low-profile wheels are starting to come stock. This is definately the case with the G35 as it has very acceptable quality lighting *and* wheels.
On cars like the 240SX, it came with 15x6.5" wheels running 195/50/15 -- you can obviously see the need for going with a larger wheel, but up to a certain extent. The more performance oriented 300ZX turbo came with 16x7.5 front and 16x8.5 rear -- the R32 Skyline GT-R comes with 16x8 and typically run 225/50/16 or 245/45/16, stock. Most people with these vehicles upgrade to 17 and maybe 18 inch wheels. BUT, from a performance aspect you should really focus on going with a wheel big enough to let you fit nice large brake system -- but also wide enough to give you a nice selection of wide tires and a certain amount of side-wall flex that goes with your driving style.
And thats a wrap.
