2004 G35 Reliability - Or any year really...

***ATTENTION MOD***
Please read my post before you move this to the classifieds - I am asking for general reliability info on G35's. I am not posting to BUY. I already have one at a dealer reserved and I am doing research prior to closing on it. My post will get few useful replies in the forum to which you moved this post.

Has 24,500 miles on it - sunroof, spoiler, bose, dual zone climate (indicative of premium package?), homelink, and a lot of other options (leather, heated seats, etc.)

The price seems excellent based on KBB, etc. (26,500$) and the VIN checks out clean.

As it only has a little over a year of factory warranty left, I am wondering how these cars have been holding up - I know Infiniti was known for excellent reliability back on 04 (and to some extent now?).

Are there specific problems or failures that i should look for or expect? Is this car, with such low mileage, one owner, worth getting a pre-purchase inspection on based on typical issues with these?

I'm selling my 01 325i for this (which I absolute love), but I test drove the G35 and I actually enjoyed the drive (which was 2 hours long) more than the 06 330i.

Also, and this is a longshot, anyone have any experience with a babyseat in the back? Expecting our first this summer, and that is something that will play into the success for me of this vehicle.

Thanks!

G
some g35c's have problems w/ oil consumption...

other than that, there are no huge problems

some other common ones are
wheel axle click
gas tank filling problems
(nothing else coming to mind @ the present)
but these are all fixed by TSBs for free at the dealership

reliability is pretty good for these cars overall

i personally don't have experience w/ babyseat in the back, but i've heard that the seats are too narrow, so the babyseat sits on the sides of the seat \__/
which causes creases and what-not, so to fix that problem, put something under the babyseat.

yeah, i think it's worth trading in your bimmer. i've heard many stories about bad reliability with these new gen bmws

If you are considering an 04 or 03 there are inherent issues that prevail. As an owner of an 04 Coupe I can mention to be aware of brake, tire, and paint issues. The OEM brake pads have a ton of dust and wear fast... mine were replaced at 13,000 miles. You can replace them with an aftermarket pad, but I can't give you any feedback on that. The tires on the stock rims will feather on the fronts and wear prematurely on the middle treads on the rears. The paint chips easily and it is best to go for a clear bra. I don't believe the paint has improved to this date. Good luck. It's still a great value and a fun car.

I've bought my 03 6MT used with 56k miles. It's been about two months and so far so good(knock on wood).

Only typical problems i've seen is the usual problems that's been posted in this forum like.....tire rumble, some panel rattle(haven't noticed yet), 10 minutes of transmission whine in freezing weather, brembo dust and squeak.

I'm pretty sure 03 and 04 has the same specs with 04 having the tire pressure sensors. 05 and up has the rev-up engine with 298hp which has the oil consumption issue.

I have an 03 with 80k miles. Never had any major problems, serviced it on all the intervals, just recently got the fan belts replaced. My only complaint would be, in 2003 when I got it, I had the brake pads recalled/replaced like twice (I have a non brembo) and I think the 03s had some brake wear problems, but ehhh other than that I love it

Seems like outside of brakes, tires, and some possible hose/belt issues, not much else is a problem.

You have to remember I'm coming from a 2001 BMW (one of the years people say has some of the worst electrical problems for a 3-series (I've experienced all of them))

This car drove great, I have a test drive scheduled on a John Cooper Works MINI Cooper S today, after that I think I'll be ready to make the decision.

I don't want to afford the BMW 335 - otherwise that might have been the answer.

If you search for the baby seat thing, there was a long thread about 3-4 months ago that covered how everyone was doing it, even including some pictures of how people have the seats mounted

I have an 03 6MT bought new in Apr 03. So the car is 4 years old and I had absolutely no problem with it. The 6MT came with the Brembo brake and they were much tougher than those that came with the Automatic 5AT G35. One advice, be prepare to replace the tires more frequently than on your BMW because the low RPM torque of the G will make you go through a set of rear tire every 12 to 15 K miles. The front can last double that amount, but you will have to rotate (physically unmount and remount the tires) to minimize the feathering.

04 6MT with 25K and I have a baby seat in mine! I just put a towel underneath the seat and it works out just fine! No problems with my girl (knocks on the wood like everyone else)! Only, and I do mean the ONLY thing that sucks with the baby seat, is if its raining and your rushing to get your child inside waiting on that slow azz motorized seat to come up!

'04 G-35C One of the best......................

Porvided it hasn't been in an accident you won't have any problems. Plus
it's low mileage car so I wouldn't be concerned.....although it might not
hurt to buy an extended warranty just to cover your a$$!

Japanese cars are typically wel made and have few quality problems. The G35 is certainly one car that I wouldn't hesitate to own without a warranty. There's no way I'd own either a Porsche or a M3 without a warranty.

I have a 2004.5, purchased new, with 56k on it. Other than the tire roar/feathering, no problems. I'm afraid to even say it here, but with the stock pilot sports, I only now have to get new tires. Since I have winter tires, I would say that I have probable 35k-40k on the original tires - not something that is typical on this forum. The tire roar was really bad in the front for the last 20k. However, if you look at the fronts, they have plenty of tread on them. I have used TWO car seats for children. Not that big of a deal with only one. One more thing: If you live in a cold or snowy area, you will need snow tires.
