My car is 91K miles now and been using M1 synthetic since 10K miles. Change oil mostly at 5K miles, sometimes up to 5.5K miles (heavy foot most of the time). Car still smooth (knock on wood).

You'll be ok with that much of mileage, but just change oil as soon as you can as one said above.

Much to my surprise, if you open your owners manual, theres a chart in there somewhere that says regular service intervals. The "max" we can apparently go on one serving of motor oil is 7350 miles without a change. Now, obviously, as with all things, your exact mileage may vary before sludging becomes an issue, but I tend to try to change @ 3000-3500 just to be on the safe side. Theres no reason oil would have problems at 5k, unless you drive your car like its going out of style. If your drive is mostly highway though, 5k highway really isnt as much as youd think on oil these days.

I'd change my oild every 3k miles, some time few hundred miles more or less. At the end of 3K miles, I would inspect the oil color and texture with the oil stick...my boss thinks that I should change every 5K miles but that would over kill my engine from the way I drive and the way his drive!!

How do you change your filter without doing an oil change? Just curious...

You grab the filter and turn... Just kidding... You can take the filter off and only loose whatever oil is in it. It doesn't drain the whole pan.

but I tend to try to change @ 3000-3500 just to be on the safe side.

But there's zero evidence to support the belief that 3K mile oil changes do anything to promote longer engine life on modern cars using synthetic oil or even a synthetic blend that's used by Infiniti. My son is now driving my old '95 G20 with well over 200K miles on the odometer, and for the last 12 years we've been changing oil every 7-8K miles. I did a compression test on the cylinders last summer and they all read nearly identical. I asked my local independent mechanic how long the engine will last, and he said that he wouldn't be surprised if I got 300K before a rebuild would be required.

Changing oil more frequently won't hurt anything other than your wallet, but I really doubt that it extends the life of the engine. It seems like those Jiffy Lube comercials have scared the hell out of millions of car owners who are now willing to throw away $40 for a needless oil change.
