So I got to admit a couple of embarrassing things. First of all, my brand new, shiney, 200KM on the dial G 6 speed is my first manual transmission car. I've driven lots of manual cars so I'm plenty comfortable driving a stick and I've owned dozens of motorcycles, so again, I'm not a total chucklehead but I have no idea what 'double clutching' is.
I was watching The Fast and the Frivolous, er Furious the other day and they were going on about granny shifting and double clutching and I suddenly felt like a dingus as I had no idea what this meant.
Can someone please explain how to double clutch and what the benefits are versus granny shifting?

one quick thing... the people that made fast and the furious are stupid as hell.
in that movie, he bashes the other guy for not double clutching when they're doing a quarter mile run (which for some reason takes like 30 seconds in that movie).
You don't double clutch when you're not slowing down.

that was a half decent explaination.
You don't need to double clutch with all the nice synchros doing their job nowadays.. but it is slightly smoother.

Alright... I think I understand now. Thank you for posting a link to that article.

I agree that most modern syncro-mesh manual transmissions can be shifted without this type of action nor have I felt the need to match my revs while downshifting in my G (so far-only had it for 2 days now).

Haha that movie is absolutely horrible. I would not listen to a single piece of car "knowledge" mentioned in it. Double clutching is probably the absolute last thing you'd wanna do when drag racing because it takes a hell of a lot longer than both normal shifting technique and shifting w/o taking your foot off the gas. Not only that, but as wizawuza mentioned, you only need to do it 1) when you're slowing down, and 2) when you're driving a car w/o syncros.

Funny, I have heard that term before and never knew what it was. I have driven stick for years with that technique just from common sense. Why would you downshift any other way?

so are all you guys double clutching your 6MT's when downshifting?
i've just been leaving it in whatever gear until my speed decreases to fit the lower gear, then downshift into it. It jerks slightly, less if I release the clutch slower. Maybe I should dry the double clutch technique.

I find that when the car is very cold (I am in Canada) on the first run of the day the shift from first to second is very stiff; double-clutching makes it smooth - once warm, no sweat. BTW, I put Redline GL4 Synthetic in the tranny but still need to double clutch the first to second shift when cold.....

My favorite part was how he can play with his computer NOS system while racing; his dash was completely carbon fiber (or so the movie sed so) and there is a metal plate in the center of his passenger foot area. WHY the hell would tht be there? Reduce weight with carbon fiber ... Add weight with metal??
I also haven't run into many 10 sec street cars. =)

haha yeah that movie blew. the second one was even worse. like when ever they would go over 120 the screen would like shake and get all blurry and stuff i was like what the hell i have been way past 120 and the car deffently wasnt shaking and my vision didnt get all blury. And all those cars were slow as [censored] except those old ones and the skyline of course. And all the cars were really only oging like 20mph but they just shaked the camera to make it look faster. that movie was retarted

the 2nd one did suck but i thought the story line behind the first one was great... The movie wasnt made for car enthiusiast it was made for the general audience.. looks and special effects is what made the movie.... the cars look great and the nos effects were badass...
How horrible would it be if the movie was a documentry on street cars by making everything perfect... I personally loved the first one... again i strongly think that movie was made so all would enjoy... lol how boring would it have been if the actual 1/4 mile race only took 12-13 secs.... ? so all you bashers of this great film go watch the speed channel... movies are made for entertainment.
