Smoked by a Benz :)

Im driving on 95 and see a pair of obviously after market halogens approaching quick. Im in the middle lane and there approaching from the fast lane. My boy was in the car and I told him I'd have some fun with this car. So as soon as the car started to pull up on my left, I was in the middle lane doing about 70 and he must have been doing well over 80 and i was able to maintain and pull on him. My peripheral vision caught the old style blocky Benz lights....I thought it might be one of the old C classes. I slowly started to pull away and then all of the sudden he rockets off on me to my suprise. But he literally took off on me like a rocket. On his way by me I caught the AMG tags on the right side and recognized it as one of the older big body S classes. So I slowed the G down and nervously laughed it off as my friend clowned me.

I think im more confused than anything really. Is a old S class weighing 3 trillion pounds supposed to smoke me? I don't think it was a true AMG.

Re: Smoked by a Benz :)

Even the new S class who isn't an AMG nor a V12 won't smoke the G.

An ordinary S class with the AMG Sports Package still has the AMG badge, but it's only a real AMG when it says S55.

But with people putting on fake badges, who really knows ?

NO2?

I don't think the old S class could pull on you like that. Now if it was a new S class (something like 493hp/516tq) it wouldn't even be close...

The S Class is a heavy vehicle but its got a lot of power to run that big car man. I m not sure about it pulling ahead but I wouldn't outrule it after all anyone whose driven a benz knows that they got power but they also got weight

Only an AMG S class will have the kind of HP/TQ that you're talking about.
A New S500 still has only 302hp & < 330 tq, but weighs a thousand pounds more than a G.

The current S500 (W220) makes 302hp and 339lb/ft. I think the story is referring to the older S Class (W140). There was never an AMG model of the W140, so it was either an S600 or had aftermarket mods. The AMG badges were definitely aftermarket.

Re: Smoked by a Benz :)

The old S Class models didn't come in AMG at least in the states at least.
The old C Class did however.

The new AMG models 55s not the 32s will pretty much rape the crap out of the G on the highway if traveling at a high speed already. The CLK55 has I believe 369hp and the larger more powerful cars such as the CL55, SL55, S55 have 493hp and the E55 has 469. I drove the RS6 which has 450hp on the highway against a G and trust me...something like these cars will easily rocket off against the G on the highway at high speeds.

The C32K (349hp, 332lb/ft) is actually a couple of tenths quicker than the CLK55 (362hp, 376lb/ft), due to weight. All current AMG cars run 0-60 in under 5 seconds. A G35 would need TT to keep up.

Re: Smoked by a Benz :)

We have a 600SEL in the family, the first of the 6.0L V12 140 chassis Benz's and let me help clear some things up here...

It's a BOAT, but it moves like no other car in its class PERIOD! I have pulled next to cars such as Vette's weighing at least half its weight, and still have given them a run from a stand still. The G Coupe might have an advantage from "light to light" runs, but on the highway, the 600 will roast it! No question about it.

I know I'm gonna get those who will say no way, its too heavy, look at its 1/4 mile times and so on, but if you haven't been in a V12 Benz cruizing at 80MPH, and then slam on the gas and watch the speedo go from 80 to 150 with no effort in seconds, you really cant judge it's sheer power!

The car pulls hard and I'm not surprised one passed a G like that at all. It may have been a V12, but then again, even the 500's are pulling machine on the long hual.

Don't under estimate these luxury sedans with the V8's and V12'. They may seem to have poor performance specs by "our" standards, but when push comes to shove, they can really put a dent in someones ego....

Re: Smoked by a Benz :)

This is very true. What most people don't understand about Benzes is that they don't launch well. They have so many electronic gizmos that tame the car's launch from a dead stop that acceleration numbers from a dead stop aren't that impressive. But acceleration from a roll is COMPLETELY different. I like Automobile Magazine's tests because they do 30-70mph acceleration runs, which is more important to real-world driving than quarter miles. Look at their comparison between the E55K, RS6, M5, and some crappy Jaguar. 0-60 numbers were about even between the E55K and the RS6. But look at the 30-70 numbers: the E55K easily left the RS6 way behind and totally trounced the other two cars.

So if you mess with a Benz that is already rolling, prepare to see its taillights, unless you're in some wicked performance machine.
