What does the G and the 35 stand for?
Re: What does the G and the 35 stand for?
Even you have to admit that you're not the "average" chic, Robin. I don't know many women that take the time to supercharge their cars or paint their brakes so I'm not surprised that you know what G35 stands for...
Re: What does the G and the 35 stand for?
Most luxury brands (excluding BMW) now use a letter followed by the displacement with the lower letters representing higher class vehicles (Acura seems to be random). X usually means it has AWD or 4x4, and if it follows the first letter, it's a SUV (FX, RX, LX, GX).
Re: What does the G and the 35 stand for?
In Infiniti's alpha-numeric car name scheme, the number stands for the engine displacement, whereas the letter stands for the model of automobile. The former rule was that, the later the letter appeared in the alphabet, the better/more expensive the car, but it looks like they threw that system out the window with last year's new models. Infiniti has used the following letters:
FX - performance SUV/wagon thing. The only Infiniti ever offered in two engine trims simultaneously: the FX35 and FX45.
G - The G is historically Infiniti's entry level car. The G35 replaced the G20. In the future, "G" may be Infiniti's performance model due to the G35's success.
I - entry level luxury car, the equivalent of the Lexus ES series (or so Infiniti had hoped). The I30 changed to the I35 when Infiniti replaced the VQ30 engine with the VQ35. This is Infiniti's only remaining FWD car. I believe 2004 is the last year for this model, however.
J - Infiniti's only prior attempt at a performance-oriented, rear drive car was the J30. It looked a little like a rounded-off Skyline from the front, but like a midsize Ford or Chevy sedan from the rear and sides. It did not sell well, and was discontinued in '97. I suspect that its poor sales performance is the reason our cars are not called J35s instead of G35s, since the V6, RWD J30 was a much closer relative to the G35 than the I4, FWD G20. "J35" would also more correctly follow the "lower letters are superior" pattern versus the I35.
M - a muscular, just-short-of-full-size sedan. I think the M45, which replaced the M30, is actually faster in a straight line than the G35 Sedan. There will be a new car in 2005 to replace the current M45, although it will probably carry the same "M45" name.
Q - the Q45 has been Infiniti's flagship, fullsize luxury sedan, and is the longest running model to go without a name change.
QX - the discontinued QX4 was Infiniti's luxury SUV, and is just now being replaced by the QX56.

Re: What does the G and the 35 stand for?
I dont think the QX4 is not being replaced with the Q56 because they are two different size cars. Is the twin the Nissan Pathfinder being replaced with the Pathfinder Armada? No. Also the QX4 was the only Infiniti where the number didnt stand for engine liter because the QX4 and Pathfinder were at first a 3.0 then in 2001 they changed it to Nissans all powerful 3.5 liter engine.
Re: What does the G and the 35 stand for?
I didn't think the QX4 was slated for dismissal either, but it's been completely removed from Infiniti's website. It won't even let you locate a leftover QX4 at a dealer. Good catch on the displacement thing though. I guess they were going for "Q-4x4" on that one.

This one is easy! It's the noise people make when they are looking at the great lines as it goes by. Sorry I couldn't hold that one back....

G for entry level luxury model in Infiniti's line up... ie: infini's previous g20 model.
35 for the displacement in liters... 3.5 liters in g35, 2.0 liters in g20.
'03 Infiniti G35 Coupe M6
GTR - R = g35 coupe

Re: What does the G and the 35 stand for?
well for japan its GT350 which means GRAND TOURING with the 350 being the engine... 3.5 litre.
Bringing it to the states... instead of giving it a race car feel to attract the older market as well they changed to G35. They prob just made the G as in GRAND... like a GRAND MARQUIS. To make it sound luxurious. The 35 is kept for the engine still.
For the european market it's just Skyline. They like to be different from U.S.
Like the altima is bluebird isnt it?
Also what is the model number of g35 engine anyways?
like for the R34's the engine is RB26dett, which is where the R came from.
