Interesting graphs. Cool for Infiniti, wow 3rd to Caddy! and Lexus.
Hummer looks like it should come with a built-in mechanic.

Doesn't this chart scream the questions:
"Why the disparity between Nissan and Infiniti or BMW and Mini or Mercury and Ford or Cadillac and other GM divisions etc?
How then does Honda/Acura manage to reduce the gap?
Are these isolated to specific plants or company division work ethic/philosophy?
Or could it be corellated to salaries paid to workers in specific divisions??
Are they designed in to stratify different classes of buyers??
Mmmmmmm.......
Of course that is one justification to pay a 10k to 20k premium .... Well worth it..IMO.

The disparity between the basic and premium brands is indeed interesting when one considers that most of the premium brands are essentially gussied-up versions of the base brand, and are often built on the same assembly lines. I've always believed that the Powers' initial quality survey was more a reflection of the quality of dealer service than on the quality of the car. When Nissan, Toyota and Honda established their premium brands, they awarded franchises only to those existing dealers with the highest customer satisfaction survey scores. Anyone who has experienced service at both Nissan and Infiniti dealers know the level of difference between the two. If a consumer is unhappy with a dealer's response to a particular complaint, they are more likely to start nit-picking other aspects of the car, so that a single complaint can quickly multiply.

Re: For all you complainers out there!!!!!!!
Just how bad do you think the difference REALLY is between Hummer and Lexus? What is the definition of a "problem?
Is it a transmission which fails on the highway and takes 2 months on backorder, or is it a cigarette lighter which doesn't get quite hot enough"?
Seriously, on average, Hummer, has only slightly more than 2 problems per car - that seems pretty darned good, considering what I guess MIGHT be considered a complaint.
Is it good, or is it actually quite bad? How does it compare to the truly awful cars of the 80's?

What's with the big disparity between Infiniti & Nissan? Toyota & Honda seems to match up more closely with their luxury division.

>>I never knew so many people would complain about a hummer.<<
I recall reading that the results were skewed by a disproportionate number of owners complaining about fuel economy. There's a commentary in there somewhere about 1. the literacy rate of Hummer owners (EPA ratings are in 24 font bold letter type on the window sticker), 2. the poverty rate of Hummer owners (way too many of these $50k+ monstrosities driven by young, downwardly-mobile rap artist wannabies living at home), and 3. the educational level of Hummer owners (probably never passed high school physics; ergo, more weight requires greater force which requires greater energy).

Lexus is the beast, in this category. I hope Infiniti can get the cap closer, and start giving Lexus run for it's money.

Gingerbaker, Others,
The numbers are actually meaningful in several ways. Averages are not statistically significant indicators of the dissatisfaction a vocal minority that have the say, 20% of Hummers that experience the 80% of complaints or whether the majority of the complaints are nitpicks ("If I pay >$50k I'm bitchin about everything and since I'm not a 9 to 5 Joe, I have plenty of free time to nitpick").
I do know a lot of people with Saabs and just by the number of times their cars are in the shop (mostly mysterious, ghost electrical problems) I would never buy one.
So, if the numbers are reflective of the genuinely irritating Saab-like issues instead of the "mostly bitchin'" Hummer-type problems (and I believe this is the case otherwise Lexus would also get a lot of nuisance issues), then 2.25 problems per vehicle reflects a lot more annoyance than simply 'slightly more than 2 problems per car'.
I agree with Rainmeister about the awardiing of premium franchises to the best dealers. It is a reasonable explanation for a lot of what the data is suggesting.
