Almost sold on black...

From what I gathered, it seems like black generally looks better than Diamond Graphite; however, it requires a lot more work. I guess all I really need to know before I make my final decision is exactly how much more cleaning I'd expect to do with black as opposed to diamond graphite? Are we talking twice as much, or more?

I live in virginia, where there's a moderately low amount of rain and snow compared to other parts of the country. I also won't have a garage. I guess I'd be willing to clean once a week for the first year or two, but then I see myself getting a little more lazy in the years following. It seems like everyone I know gives a huge warning about owning black cars, so I just want to make sure I make the right decision. Thanks for the help!

Once a week will be plenty if it doesn't rain much.

Re: Almost sold on black...

I'm in Virginia too, and I went with DG. I chose it because I actually like DG better on the coupe than black, but I think I would be insane by now if I got black. I wash my DG coupe about once a week, and even that isn't enough. I spent two hours washing it yesterday morning, and by this afternoon, it was noticably dirty (at least to me). If I had black, I think I'd be washing it every day. I'd probably have to quit my job just so I could wash my car all day. But that's me, and I'm just a little obsessed with my car. You live in VA so you'll get tons of pollen in the Spring so keep the wash bucket handy.

The rain and the snow you describe would get all of our cars dirty. If you get Black, it'll be the daily dust that you'll notice the most, even garaged. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, but it is alot of work. I had a Black Maxima before my G for 10 years, and I don't miss the extra upkeep that it required.

Re: Almost sold on black...

I look at it this way... I like black about twice as much as I like diamond graphite. So I'd be willing to do twice as much cleaning for the black. Any more cleaning or maintenance for black, and I'll have to make my final decision diamond graphite. What do you think?

Re: Almost sold on black...

Well why didn't you say you liked black? If you like a color more, definitely go with it so you won't regret it later. I thought you liked them equally. My disclaimer is, if you can't garage it then its going to be dirty really damn fast.

Re: Almost sold on black...

That's the problem...I like black, but I don't think I like it enough to make it my "full time job" cleaning it.

Re: Almost sold on black...

i put an order down for a black g coupe. i'm driving a black accord right now in northern nj. from all the salt from the previous snow and rain, my car isn't black anymore. keeping my car clean is no problem if i wanted to, its just a matter of the swirl marks that i will grow to hate. as much i would want to keep it extra shiny and without swirls, i think no matter what it will eventually end up with swirls anyway. i think a wash a week and leaving my car garaged will be good enough for me. my car is coming beginning of spring so hopefully i will miss all the winter madness. plus i love the BLACK on a g35.
also, has anyone received a package for the exterior paint job on their car when they bought it? some sort of protectant stuff sprayed on before you get the car?

Re: Almost sold on black...

Jason-

Don't mean to discourage you...but you'll have a real love/hate relationship with a black car. I live in CT (we get just a little bit more snow than you), and my previous car (a black Eclipse GST) just got worse with time. Sure the dirt and dust are easy to spot, but they are also easy to clean. The problem is the SWIRL MARKS. On black, you can't miss 'em. As carefull as I was, I couldn't avoid them.

While I think black is DEFINITELY one of the most striking colors on the road (when it's clean), you'll never catch me owning a black car again. It's far too heartbreaking...
