Anyone drive manual coupe??

here is the question, the coupe on manual seems to be accelerating fast, but from shifting 1st to 2nd gear or even 3 to 4, the rpm seems to be go down really slow....look likes it need to keep at low rpm to shift to next gear for a smooth run..am i right...
If it is true...then it has to be wait for long time to shifting gear to gear....therfore really slow on the car...any suggestion on how to drive the manual coupe smooth and fast??

Not sure what you're talking about. To me it shifts pretty much the same as every other manual I've owned and driven.

G35 is my first manual shift car and if I wait for the rpm to go down it jerks, but if you just shift fast while rpm is still high I found out that it is smooth and you wont even feel it specially from 3rd to 4rth and so on..I guess this is how they design it, quick shifting beast .

I think that's how it is with any manual.

Agreed! If you let the engine revs drop too low the engine is in effect "braking" the car, hence the jerk. I've know a number of people who use "engine braking" to slow down when coming to a stop light. Not a good idea in my book, as it puts a tremendous strain on the drive train. Brake pads are a lot less expensive to replace than clutches, etc.

Re: Anyone drive manual coupe??

Are you having problems up-shifting at high RPM’s? I had a manual transmission that wound not shift into gear unless the engine RMP and the transmission gear RMP where synchronized. There is a mechanism in the trany that should align the gears alivating this problem. It almost sounds like you not using the clutch.

Learning to drive a manual is an art that does take some time getting use to. It’s a beautiful thing when you up-shift and can use the engine’s kinetic energy to give you that extra boost when shifting gears. Its all in how you feather the cluch.

My biggest problem with the manual transmission is that my wife can not drive a stick, thus I had to buy the automatic. I guess I should of thought of that before I got married.

LOL - that was actually one of the reasons I fell in love with my wife. She can drive a stick! And now it's paying dividends (G35C M6 coming.... =)

My wife and I have come to an agreement. This one's an auto, and she's gonna learn to drive a stick. Since she's pregnant, I caved. Anyone else notice how pregnant women always crave something that's not in the house at the moment? At least with a G35, I don't mind running errands anymore.

Re: Anyone drive manual coupe??

rjt4re: Having the engine revs drop low is not engine braking. Engine braking is when you shift to a lower gear and let the higher rpm's slow the car down.

If you take too long to shift to the next gear, the rpm's will fall to idle speed, then when you let the cluth out the rpm's must go back up to match the gear. It takes a while to get used to but shifting at a decent speed will let the rpm's match better and you will get a smooth shift.

Hope that makes sense.

you just need to break in the car. It gets smoother. Or you just adapt to the car. I'm not sure which one happened with me. Either I became one with the car or it just got smoother. I don't think about it, I just drive.

Re: Anyone drive manual coupe??

Gas off, clutch down. It's kind of like the motion of tapping your feet on different beats; one up, one down. When shifting, if the engine revs, your late letting up on the gas. If the car lurches forward, your late pushing in the clutch. By the time your foot presses the clutch pedal to the floor, gas is already off and you should be just short of being in the next gear. Then, as you let up on the clutch about a quarter or third of the way, as you feel it start to catch, be right there with some gas. The faster you clutch up, gas down, the less of an issue precision is. The longest period of clutch engagement time (before the clutch pedal is all the way out) is when starting up from a stop. All other shifts should be pretty quick. The worst is keeping the clutch half engaged and having the engine reving more than it should for that speed and gear. It's best to lighten up on the gas a bit then let the clutch all the way out. You're probably allowed about two scorced clutch smell episodes before you're shortening the life of your clutch. Hope this makes some sense. Good luck. ...dean

I agree with OvaYahead, it gets smoother after break-in. The shifter loosens up a bit...and once that happens, that's when the real fun begins =).

My first couple of weeks were a little rough, but I am at one with my G now! I think it is a matter of getting used to it, that's all.

Re: Anyone drive manual coupe??

Practice, Practice, Practice...

though I don't fully release the gas, just let it go a bit.

Also keep in mind, the dual mass flywheel, at least from my experience with dual mass flywheels....it's very heavy (in the 20 pound range), so there's a lot of rotation inertia, so it's going to rev slower up and down.

It's just getting accustomed to the car
