crazy insurance costs

hi everyone! i'm new to this website so try to help me out. i ordered a coupe about 2 weeks ago not worrying about the cost of the car, but then came insurance... i live in new jersey (one of the highest insurance rates) but one place quoted me about $5,100/ year. roughly about 3-4 hundred monthly, then again i don't have a VIN # yet so she can't tell me the exact monthly payments. does anyone know of any good insurance?

can't wait til my baby arrives!

Re: crazy insurance costs

well, i'm only 18.. i knew it would be high since i'm young and i live in jersey. it was a quote from liberty mutual, that's who i'm currently insured with, but i don't have my own car. the g35 is going to be under my name, so that means i have to have my own policy. sux! i have been driving for 2 years, but i know there is a discount for having a clean record for 3 years, thing is i can't wait! the only discount i would have is good-student, anti-theft alarm and i think anti-lock brakes.

can't wait til my baby arrives!

Re: crazy insurance costs

Put the car under one of your parents names (pay the monthly payment) and then have them put the car under their insurance. Get a break with possibly a multi car policy. Something to consider.

yeah.. i agree.. put it under your parents' names.. as long as u still live with them.. i wanted to do that, but i don't live with my parents.. so now i'm fitting the insurance bill, which wasn't as bad as i thought.. other insurance cos have quoted me 3000 or more.. geico's was a pleasant surprise.. sorry they're not in jersey.. try AIG. i remember getting a reasonable quote from all state.
good thing i only have 2 years before hitting 25.. and getting that big insurance premium cut!

Re: crazy insurance costs

haha... thanks everyone for your help, but my name is already on the papers, so it's hard to just put it under my mom's name, plus she just bought a 2003 maxima se (of course my choice) so her insurance is already high. i'm being the responsible child in the family by having everything on my name. it's a good investment for someone my age anyways. oh yeah, i'm waiting for an agent from allstate to call me back with a quote. thanks again!

Transfer the car to your mother. Pay the registration fees. Pay the gift tax, if necessary. You'll still get much more money back. I'm 30 and paying $1100 a year in fairly comprehensive car insurance in the Boston area (skipping the substitute transport premium). You'd be crazy to pay thousands more for the same "product."

like they said, put it in your parents name. i mean, did you really wonder why they're charging you so much

that's what i did with the mustang and coupe- parent's names...saves a HELLA lot in insurance

Re: crazy insurance costs

Kong... most insurances lower the premium when you hit 24 1/2, because you pay insurance for 6 months ahead of the current day..at least thats what happened to my brother with his ML500 benz, he was pleasantly surprised, and relieved heh
his insurance payments were cut in half at 24 1/2!!!

p1na1pr1nc3ss... im sure you can still put the car under any 1 of your parent's names, infiniti will just have to change their forms and run the credit check etc. etc.
And a person can have 2 cars under their name, a primary and secondary (lots of people have 2 cars, like lets say a sports car i.e. G35 Coupe will be your mom's "weekend car" that will be driven minimally)
goodluck!

Re: crazy insurance costs

sweet! only a year and a half to go!

p1naipr1nc3ss,
even though your parents just got a new car, the insurance rates shouldn't increase by much.. definitely not enough to offset the cost of your insurance alone.. before i got the G, my previous car (4runner) was under my parents name and their insurance.. so they had 3 cars under their plan.. the insurance for all 3 for one year cost them about 2/3 of what one of my 6month payments for my G costs... so, you'll be saving thousands a year, which could go to making payments on your G or whatever mods you wanna get... haha.. so can even pay your parents a small fee for letting them put the car under their name and insurance.. it's good to get a record under your name thru financing a car or paying insurance, but not at the cost of high premiums.. and esp. not at the age of 18!

Re: crazy insurance costs

Geico isn't available in NJ. The rate you were qouted seems a bit high but not far off for this state at your age. Im 31 with no tickets or accidents, I live in North Jersey and pay $1700 a year with Liberty Mutual. I would have your mom put the car under her insurance and list you as a 50% driver. Your premium should go down significantly but will still be very high because of your age.

Watch out though, one speeding ticket or accident(God forbid) and you'll be paying about $7000 a year!

Does anyone know how much insurance would be for a red coupe. It will go under my dads name which is 43 years old. I live in AZ.

Re: crazy insurance costs

For some strange reason, once you get married, insurance companies just naturally assume you've settled down a bit and drop your rates.

Rates depend on many factors. What neighborhood you live in, is your car in a garage, in a lot, or on the street at night. How far do you commute to work every day. Where you work. Age. Gender. Marital status. If you have comprehensive or collision in addition to liability, the value of the car and it's desireability by thieves comes into play. It's a veritable smorgasbord of facts and figures. If you want to know how much it's going to cost, just call insurance companies in your area. They'll be more than happy to give you a quote. You don't need a VIN, you can get by with year/make/model/trim level/engine/transmission.
