You probably wouldn't have to run normal dino oil that long. Everyone's going to have a different opinion on it, I may run normal oil for the first change or two, but I would guess that synthetic would be fine before 10K. Your motor should be fully broken in well before that time.

While its true that the VQ continues to break in up to 10K, most VQs seem to have settled into their characteristics by 5K. You're making about as much HP as you will at 5K. Personally for me, 5K was a nice compromise between the breakin and the added protection of syn*.

* I use syn because I like its cold pour flow for startup and resistance to sludge.

Non synthetic oil. If you wait until 10K to change over to synthetic it won't hurt anything, but at the same time, if you're coming up on a change at like 8K or something like that, it may not hurt to swap then too. A great way to find out how often your oil really needs to be changed is by sending a sample to blackstone labs for testing.

Also, Nissan oil filters are probably the best I've found. Mobil one's good too, but a lot more expensive. The generic filter's suck, many don't have anti-drainback valves, etc...

I suspect you are thinking of the old ones, the newer filters for the VQ35 have cardboard end caps.. Shame, the old filters were definately high quality.. made things easy..
