LED Taillight Mod

I'm planning on doing a taillight mod to the G35c. I want to put LED's around the outside(brake & turnsignal)smaller round taillight, to give it a GT-R look from behind.
I have a friend who is an Electronic Wizard that has agreed to help me with the rewiring & LED placments.
I bought an extra taillight assembly to experiment with, I'm having trouble removing the LENS off of the taillight assembly. I've tried Heating it in the oven for 10 minutes at 200 degrees(that's how another friend got his headlight lense off) but it wouldn't budge. I hesitate to go any Hotter in the Oven for Fear that I might Cook the LED's & Circuit Board that come mounted in the taillight assembly. This is the only way to gain access to the inner LED's,
Does ANYONE KNOW of how to do this? Thanks...

Re: LED Taillight Mod

I was thinking of doing the same exact thing.... the wiring would be simple-- just wire a circle of LEDs to the existing LEDs and you'd have two rings of light that behave exactly the same, whether braking or not.

Plus, the turn signal bulb would not be affected. I was thinking of maching a nice, lightweight piece of aluminum to fit snugly on the protrusion of the turn signal lens housing. Then, simply drill 8 perfectly spaced holes to mount the LEDs.

As for separating the taillight assembly lens from the housing, yeah, I think you're gonna have to heat it up in an oven until the glue softens. I doubt you'll hurt anything.

Where did you buy the extra taillight assembly? How much was it?

Re: LED Taillight Mod

Youv'e got some good Ideas, basically the same thing I'm tring to do.
I got the Taillight assembly from Infiniti for $205.00, I was told retail is around $235-250.00.
Just can't seem to seperate the Lense from the housing. I've tried heating it several times in the Oven. Now I'm up to 240 degrees for 12 minutes. Afraid to go much hotter because of potential damage to the LED's & Circuit Board. I'm at a loose...HELP!!!

Yeah, I had a similar idea. Though, I was going to use an LED for the turn signal. I saw them at SEMA. They looked kinda like the ones you see on truck trailers, but they were already assembled and came in different sizes.

Instead of increasing the temperature to 240 degrees, why not leave it at 200 for longer than 12 minutes?

2004 Coupe/DG/5AT on order...Is it January 21 yet?

Re: LED Taillight Mod

don't try putting it in the oven anymore. I heard the sealing of the rear light is a different process then the front. This is why I haven't tried to pull mine apart yet.
LOL I tried the oven trick with my wifes 03 R6 rear light, it melted the lens. I never got the lens off. I guess on most LED tail lights it's sealed differently.

About the ring of LED's around the blinker. I was going to try that, but heard if I spliced the new LED's into the stock brake lights, the LED's would not be as bright. Is this true?

If the LEDs were actually bulbs that were wired in series, then that would be true-- as you add bulbs, each one will be proportionately dimmer.

But there should be no such problem with LEDs.

A slightly different idea that I had was to use the existing LEDs next to the cirlces to create the outside circle (around the blinker). In that case, I'd only be moving the existing LEDs to another location, not adding any more of them.
