Actually that new VW is kinda dope. A bit overpriced, yes, but phat nonetheless. VW is obviously targeting the 7-Series, A8, and S-Class would-be buyers. Definitely not G35 competition.

The new eclipse looks great! I hope it makes it into production ok.
I'm not crazy about the new mustang...I think it looked way better in pre-production (pic above), it was more sleek, clean and classy looking. That would have competed with the g.
The production verion (below) is kinda garish and I don't think it'll compete at all with the classier g35c.

Hyundai's not compettion to Infini. Neither is a VW. Reviews are coming in on the VW Phaeton--truly doesn't make it as a luxo sedan. Definitely outclassed by its German counterparts in the handling department, and let's face it, a $50K-$70K Lex would make it look silly as a luxo sedan.
By comparison, when Infin came out with its G sedan, it was done well and done fine for its target class of competitors. Same thing, and maybe even more so, for the G coupe. And let's all recall that Infiniti prior to the G sedan (and then the coupe which followed about 7 months later) was known for such "bright lights in car-dom" as the re-badged Maxima/I-30 and the dubious luxo sedan Q45 that sold so poorly you hardly ever saw one on the road.
So, it has nothing to do with a car maker's reputation as in, "who would ever buy a $70K VW Phaeton luxo?". That's not the point. The point is, is the car equal to or better than its class-competition? And the answer in the case of the VW Phaeton is, so far, NO! That alone will sink its sales.

Re: Coupe getting new competition...?
I think this mustang looks good. They have captured the look of the late 70's cars. I'm not fond of Ford but those old Boss mustangs were a hoot. There is a different kind of joy that comes from American V-8 muscle. Saw a plate on a cobra here ( v8venom ), thought that was cool.

Re: Coupe getting new competition...?
I'll wait until I see it at the car show here in NYC in April to make my final assessment, but based on your pics the prototype (which I saw at last year's show and liked a lot) looks like it was designed by an artist and the production version looks like it was redesigned (badly) by a committee.
Sadly, it seems to happen all too often, especially in Detroit...

Re: Coupe getting new competition...?
Conversely the g35c and even 350z didn't appear to give up much when they went from preproduction to production....they stayed very true to the auto show concepts with only minor changes...
