Question How does the 6MT have an additional ~20 HP over the 5AT?

As the topic says, what's different on the 6MT that gives it another ~20 horsepower than the 5AT? Is this a fairly simple modification or is it something like a more aggressive cam, different heads, etc.

Only at the flywheel. At the wheels, the AT will have more parasitic power loss due to the Torque Converter and Auto Tranny.... the 6MT and auto will probably put down similar peak TQ to the wheels, but the 6MT will probably have a broader curve... I would presume.

05+ 6MT had the so-called Rev-UP motors.

Rev-up motors includes:

Variable valve exhaust cam timing
shorter intake runners on lower plenum for more up top in the Rev
7000RPM redline and 7300RPM fuel cutoff

Indicated by various tuning shops also to have a somewhat beefier internals.

This is an excellent question I always wondered about this too..I just assumed that the manual transmission would be quicker than an automatic (which it generally is) but I didn't know it would be that much quicker...now I know...

It isn't that much quicker. The numbers have shown time and time again that in most cases the winner is based on the driver, not the tranny.

This is the future, children. There is hardly a difference between AT and MT's in performance, in road-going vehicles. The only palpable difference is the user input and driving dynamics, and even that is starting to lean towards computer controlled cluth-operated transmissions (DSG, SMG, etc). Hell, even true "automatics" like ones produced by ZF for BMW (most notably, in the 335i) are pretty spectacular.

Don't let meat headed fan boyism get in the way of what you want.

That said, I do like my 6MT, as clunky and notchy as it is.
