Get the G, but I agree with BK--watch out for street parking. Berkeley is such a pedestrian-oriented city, so you have tons of people who don't even care about their own ride enough to avoid bumping others.
I got mine in Twilight Blue for school pride... the red is nice, but I wouldn't have been able to live with myself at the end of the day.

Re: should i get a g35 coupe?
I'll offer a different opinion and tell you to put that money away for four years. My car got the crap kicked out of it during college. It spent all day outside through all seasons, was towed by hillbilly-looking freaks 4 times, broken into twice, vandalized once, and carried enough drunk passengers in it that the interior never smelled the same again. And while nowadays I drive for fun, back in college the only reason to leave campus was to go to an off-campus party or commute home for the holiday. And the parties and bars often involved parking my car in questionable areas and left subject to abuse. Personally, even if I could go back in time, there's no way I'd put my G35 through my college years. I'd drive something that I wouldn't mind leaving outside and beating up, and could carry several people pretty easily. Maybe even a truck, and this is coming from someone who has never owned a truck. So I'd say save the $36k on the G for tuition (unless he's paying for that too), or save up for an even nicer graduation gift. Things could change dramatically in 4 years...

Re: should i get a g35 coupe?
i graduated in 2002 and moved down to santa monica. through college i drove an 83' celica.
one thing to think about -- berkeley's a pretty dirty place, plus there aren't too many places to wash your car. there is the touchless wash at oxford/kittredge, but you don't want to take your car there (rim scratches, dirty rags etc). if you don't commit to washing every couple weeks at the most, a dark G won't look good at all. if i had to own a new car in berkeley i'd rather it be white/silver/graphite for convenience... especially if i knew i'd be there a few more years. just my .02.

Re: should i get a g35 coupe?
Calgoob: I am a 3rd year MCB major. It is true what everyone else is saying about the conditions we would be putting our G coupe through. I am also considering an evo. I like to go to tahoe, It is a few k cheaper, and I really would not feel as bad if something unfortunate should happen to it. Evo makes for a pretty good college car for me.

i was considering the evo and sti also but i think the coupe would be a better buy because im going to be driving this for a long time. and lllee youre right about lighter colors but i love how the obsidian black looks! theres nothing wrong with diamond graphite with graphite interior though and thats an option too.
4runner99, im also an MCB major but im a first year and since im moving out to apartments next year, my offered me a g35 since he liked the car a lot.
