Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
Well... the Boxster will preserve the things you like, but I don't think it will address what you don't like. Convertibles are almost always louder at speed, and they're heavier so they're unlikely to give better mileage. And the top is thinner, so you're going to hear the engine. And a Porsche is not quiet (nor should it be). People usually know a Porsche is coming long before they see it. I'd be upset if I bought a Porsche that didn't sound like a Porsche.
If you have the money, I think you're looking for a Mercedes. Or the M3, but I don't think BMWs really turn heads (seems like everyone who can afford one has one). Definitely stay far away from convertibles if noise at high speed is what's bothering you about the G, though. And none of these cars are going to give you outstanding gas mileage, although I agree that my G sure is slurping it down during the break-in period.

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
I own a S2000, the torque is fine for me, I'm not a dragster. But putting the top down and driving the hell out at 9000RPM still scares the $hit out of me. This is the first car that made me feel alive and really had to try driving it.
But going to an S2000 my be a bit harsh considering that your giving up all the luxury and feature of the G35. Here a forum for a taste of the S2000. www.s2ki.com

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
hey devil, i also recommend a mercedes-benz according to your pros and cons. Mercedes always atracts attention, they are smooth as silk, quiet as night, pure unrivaled luxury.
Yes the SLK is supposed to be redone this coming year. Im sure there will be a nice waiting list.
http://mbspy.bacosys.be/r171.htm
Remember these arent the actual pictures but they are about 90% correct.
I dont recommend the SLK though, its in the same class as the BMW Z4/Audi TT, which are not that fast of cars but they are sure fun to drive.
You should go and test drive the SLK, and BMW Z4, just tell the salesman your story and im sure they'll be on their hands and knees begging you to buy their product haha good luck!
I would recommend anything with the 500 engine, but then again you'd have to pay at least 60K for the car

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
As others have said, if you're thinking of a Boxter, definitely go with the S model, or you will be more bored than your are with your G35 Coupe. And if you're thinking Boxter S, you should be thinking Corvette Z06 as an alternative, which is actually less expensive, a much better track car, more durable for racing, and will simply blow the doors off of a Boxter S in every measurable performance category.
If you are bored with the G35, then clearly you need a high octane car to keep you interested. The Boxter S isn't wild enough - the Z06 is. If you get bored of the Z06, then the next step is a career in auto racing.
The Boxter S is a fine car on its own merits, but when you compare it to the Z06, I just don't see the point of buying one unless you just simply must have a Porsche (for the name, status, or whatever) and can't afford a 911.

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
Boy look at Ed Black slam the Boxster when he never OWNED one, and I seriously doubt he's ever driven one, at least not on the track. Ed owns a "replica" Porsche 550 Spyder, not even a real one. Good looking cars, but nowhere near the performance of the Boxster S and certainly not of a modified GT3 Boxster S. Oh, and for the record I didn't sell my car, it is still sitting in my garage awaiting the next track event.
Ed is very fond of spreading lies about me and about my car(s), so much so that he just got banned over on FreshAlloy.com so now he's come here to try his hand at it again.
I say "Welcome Ed" but you better be on your best behaviour and that includes not spreading lies about people or cars.
Oh one other point about my Boxster, never a SINGLE mechanical problem in the life of this car to date, the only problem I've ever had was the dealership left an O2 sensor loose one time after a check-up and it tripped the check engine light so they tightened it back down properly, hardly the fault of the car...
I do, however, agree with Ed in this instance that a G35 coupe is a fine car and you probably won't make out well trying to trade it in this quickly on something else, but if you really don't want it then by all means buy something that you do!

Z06ified -
I would agree with you that stock vs. stock a Boxster S doesn't have the horsepower of a Z06 and can't keep up with it in the straights, although it is an even match in the turns. The Boxster will, however, have a much nicer interior and IMHO a better ride on the street. If you modify a Boxster S you can outperform Z06's on the track assuming the Z06 is stock. I know, because I routinely do so at HPT, although I could not catch a supercharged Z06, too much HP in the straights to overcome. The Z06 is a fine car, and you are right, probably the best bang for the buck out there, but it might not be to everyone's liking in terms of fit/finish/ride/interior etc. and of course doesn't come in a convertible version which might be important to him. I don't know if exclusivity plays into his mind at all, but I certainly see more Z06's around town than I do Boxster S's for whatever that might be worth in his value judgement equation. I also agree with you that if you aren't going to track a Z06, then why get it, because that is where they are the most fun!

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
Its more than just the straights, the Z06 has higher levels of braking performance and handling performance. Why people think a Z06 is only good in a straight line is beyond me, other than ignorance? I've seen this a lot from stuck up Porsche owners, until they get schooled by a Z06 on the track.
Explain to me how a Boxster S is "an even match in the turns" with a Z06? I've raced one many times in SCCA Auto-X, and beat him every time. And I'm an amateur driver while he's a very seasoned autocrosser with far more seat time in his Boxster S than I have in my Z06. Not to mentiond he's been to several driving schools before, while I've been to none. And autocross isn't even the Z06's strong suit - the high speed road course is.
Further evidence the Boxster S can't handle or stop as well as the Z06: In a slalom course, the best tested MPH for the Z06 is 70.3 MPH, versus 67.5 MPH for the Boxster S. Power has nothing to do with this test - pure handling. The Z06 can pull a full 1.0 G on the skidpad, versus 0.97G for the Boxster S. Again, great numbers for the Boxster S, but it can't handle as well as the Z06.
The Z06's handling is on par with the Porsche 911 Turbo. I don't think you would find too many Porsche owners who would say that the Boxster S handles just as well as the 911 Turbo.
Take a look at the March '03 Road & Track - there's an article in it which clearly shows the handling superiority of the Z06 against a 911 Carrera, M3, and 350Z.
Braking? 60-0 in 104 feet for the Z06, versus 113 feet for the Boxster S.
The rest of your comments I agree with for the most part, except for the interior (subjective, while the Z06 interior could be better, the Boxter's interior isn't all that great either), and commonality (I've seen a whole lot of Boxters on the road, fewer S', but still a lot; Not much of a visual difference between a regular Boxster and an S either). If you really want an exclusive car, then neither the Z06 nor the Boxster S fits that order.

Re: Should I trade in my G35C for Boxster?
Thedevil -
Did you get a chance to check out my websites yet? Let me know if you like what you see, I've got a few other privates ones for my more exclusive cars as well. As a current Ferrari 360 owner and someone who will be receiving their Porsche Carrera GT in a couple of months, I'm happy to share my years of car and track experience with you to try and help you decide which car is right for you. I've also got experience with NOS on a supercharged Lightning truck that I use for hauling things if you are more prone to go that route. If 4 wheels are too many, I also own or have owned a slew of 2 wheel vehicles from Ducati, BMW, Harley, and others. I let my wife drive the slower cars usually, so she takes the S2000 out for quick trips to the convenience store or late night snack runs to QT, but I'm sure I can get her comments if you want. I'm also happy to give you as many pointers as I can on classic cars since I have everything from a LeMans winning Jaguar to 426 Hemi powered 'Cuda and a 69 Z28 with a Muncie RockCrusher. Some cars I keep in storage in other locations so they are a little harder to get to, like my Jeep Wrangler with a lift kit for rock crawling excursions in Utah. When I'm not driving you'll probably find me in the air with my Learjet 45 XR or army surplus Apache helicopter. If it moves, I've probably got one, so if you need help just let me know, I'm here to help!
