What have I done...
What have I done...
This afternoon, I approached my driveway at an angle to keep from scraping my frontend in my 6mt. When I gave it some gas to get over the hump, the car stalled. Not used to having the limited slip differential, I thought one of the wheels was slipping, so I let off on the clutch and revved it up. After a couple of seconds I realized I was in 3rd gear. After parking in the garage, I notice the most heinous burnt clutch smell, which still lingers and hour later.
Two questions: how many months have I shortened the life of the clutch, and how much does Infinity typically charge for a clutch job?
My car has 2,000 miles, and to this point I haven't dropped the clutch for any burnouts or races.
Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

Sure you probably cut a few months of it's life but nothing drastic. That is one of the worst smells ever created though. Since the car is fairly new we don't have any real-life experience on clutch life. With semi-conservative driving you should get 60k out of a clutch. Then again some people are lucky to get 30k.

Don't sweat it-- I don't even think you could measure your clutch wear in "months".
What happened was no big deal and to worry about it would be silly. These cars are not as fragile as eggs......

Re: What have I done...
What bothers me is I was reading on another post that the smell is from the clutch slipping by the computer as a mechansim to control engine output as a part of the VDC system. - I could not understand why my car has been smelling particularly in the snow the last few weeks. What upsets me is that this is a really stupid way of managing the engine output - why not regulate the motor via the electronic throttle, slipping the clutch is sure to shorten its life and seems like a crude approach. In all my years of driving Ive always had manual cars (10 to date) and so far have never done a clutch job - the longest I kept a car for was 180,000 miles (VW Jetta) and shortest a Pontiac Sunfire (120,000) - I hope that this car wont break the record
Re: What have I done...
hmm, how high did you rev it? im sure it cant be as bad as starting off too high for a drag race. i think i screw my clutch everyday. when im tired, i dont pay attention and rev to about 2k sometimes to get going. i really hate stalling so for awhile i would overrev. or if in LA traffic hell for too long, sometimes ill get impatient and overrev too. think thats bad?

Re: What have I done...
if our clutches run out within 30k-60k miles or what not, is it under our warranty?
i mean, they ARE supposed to last 100k, so would they replace our clutch for free?

No guys, the Clutch is a wearable part, like a brake-pad.... although we do have a 12month/12,000 mile warranty on the clutch (according to my dealership)
A typical clutch-job should not cost more than $500 (incl. parts)
Thats the beauty of having a manual transmission is that it is simple, and thus easier to fix if something goes wrong.
My guess is that if you are a new MT driver, then the clutch should last you anywhere between 5,000 miles and 50,000 miles. Whereas if you are an experienced MT driver, then it should last from 60,000 onwards...

Are you serious? I've never heard of anyone having to replace a clutch until their car got in the 100,000's in mileage. Hell I had 97k on my old car and it was perfectly fine. Please tell me this car isnt a POS that needs its clutch replaced every 3 years.

Re: What have I done...
I'm not sure if it falls under this subject or not, but how bad is it to grind the gears. I've done it about three times since I bought the G, for no more than 1-2 seconds. Should I be concerned?
Re: What have I done...
I got up into the 3-4K range letting out more than half way on the clutch for several second. The smell was different and much stronger than the burnt oil smell that other g drivers have mention, and I've experienced myself.
I don't feel so bad though after reading the reply that clutch jobs only cost around $500. But, I am going to be pay more attention to the gear I'm in before letting her rip.
Thanks

Re: What have I done...
don't worry about the grinding or the riding of the clutch so much. i've had 3 MT's with over 100k miles and never had to replace. 2 hondas and a mustang gt. i drove those cars like an idiot and they were fine. just don't make a habit out of riding the clutch.
