Sporadic, random grinding noise. WTH? Figure THIS one out.

OK, work is busy so I'll try to be as quick as I can. I'll take it into the dealer when I get back, but just curious if anyone has run into this problem before...

04 Coupe, Brembo brakes. It started about a day ago. On occasion there is a random grinding noise coming from what seems to be the right rear when I hit the brakes. It only shows up about once every 20-30 times I hit the brakes, and usually when under 35 mph. Then goes away.

It SOUNDS like I have worn through a brake pad and am scrubbing the rotor, BUT, it only does it every now and then. Not consistant AT ALL. I can't seem to get it to make the noise more than twice in a row when hitting the brakes, so I can't take it in and reproduce it yet.
Just had it into the dealer and they said I had 1/2-1/3 of the pad left on the back. Doesn't mean that the INSIDE pad isn't gone, but seems strange to be that far off. Can't check it till Tuesday cause I won't be back in town until then.

Heard it this morning when pulling into the parking lot, so while the noise was grinding, I pulled the e-brake and then slowly let off the brake pedal. Once the brake pedal was released, even though the e-brake was still slowing the car, the noise stopped.

Here's what I'm thinking, what it could be, and then why it might not be:
1. Brakes are gone. But why wouldn't it be consistant? Why would it stop when I have the e-brake on and release the pedal? Why the hell can I not get it to do it back to back, or even 20-30% of the time? Hm.

2. Wheel bearing? Jacked the car up on the right rear, spun the wheel. No unusual noises, no play what-so-ever in the wheel. Heard a mild scrubbing/swooshing sound, but it was the usual "wheel is spinning and the brakes are slightly touching the rotor" sound.

3. I'm losing my mind? Nope, wife heard it once.

4. Something in between the rotor and the dust shield? Could be, but again, why is it so consistant, and why only when the brakes are depressed?

So, any ideas? Open to all thoughts to be tossed out.

-Todd

This is weird...but this happened to me once after my spring install.

Go out to your car with a lug wrench, and check to see that all wheel lug nuts are indeed tight. Just a wild suggestion bro...
