Correct Socket for Removing Wheels ?

Hi,
I've got an '06 6MT. I recently used a standard 19 mm impact socket to remove the rear wheels. I noticed that the socket left some gouges on the inside surface of the holes in the rims. Is there a special socket a person should use so that doesn't happen ?

Try a regular chrome socket. They're thinner than impacts. The lugs are 21mm.

Ken, 21mm = 13/16 if you have trouble finding a 21mm, I have read in several posts that they work fine. I'll be putting my winters on this weekend so will definitely be using my 13/16. Try not to let people at your wheels with air tools!

KenH....

You can find thin wall sockets for deep dish wheels ......I found These at the Tire Rack

I purchased a set of sockets a while back that were aluminum with a plastic sleeve to prevent damage...i think the whole set was $40.

Some others just wrap black electrical tape over there sockets to prevent paint damage.

I found that you need to make sure your not applying pressure downwards, this will force the socket to "rock" and scuff the lip of the bolt holes.

I already did a couple scuffs by not being observant of what I was doing. Now, I know exactly how to remove them without doing damage.

I have a set of these plastic coated sockets that I use for my stock wheels, they work great and protect the wheels and lugs

Also....wrap the end of the socket with duct tape. Works for me.
