strange noise...

I just drove home from my inlaws and i began hearing a real horrible noise.. On the highway it sounded like a helicopter was above me. I also feel a vibration on the steering wheel, and when i got into the city i rolled all my windows down and heard the same noise. From what I can tell it's coming from the drivers side wheel well. I looked under there and couldnt see anything wrong... anyone have an idea what this might be? Thanks.

only thing I could think of is that your inner fender well is rubbing against the tire somewhere?

You could have a bent rim. I have a similar noise and my steering wheel shakes a little at highway speeds. I hit a pot hole long back causing the rim to bent a little.

I tried letting go of the wheel while driving to see if it veers off to a certain direction, and it doesnt...

MP, see if you can get it checked today... I don't like it when I hear noises that aren't supposed to be there coming from my car. I wish I could help. I ran over a clump of duck tape once and it got stuck on my tires, but it didn't make that loud of a noise to where it sounded like a helicopter.

When you find out, let us know what it is.

two possible problems:

1) Tires
2) Tires

what you are hearing is "road noise".

sometimes when you drive, and you roll down only one window, you hear it. it DOES sound like a helicopter. BUT when you roll down the other window, the noise decreases. (dont know why, it just does)

Road noise.

Tito,

For starters . . . Be sure the lug nuts are tightened properly and that the tire/wheel combo in question is not out of balance. Good luck and be safe.

See if you got MUD or something in the threads OR rim. This could be messing up the balance causing the car to make that noise & steering wheel to shake. You may also have to take the tire or tire's off to see if something had happened to it. [Tare/RIP/Budge]. It could be allot of things from a messed up rim to the suspension. Unfortunately you are limited to what you can self diagnose without being a mechanic. I would take each wheel off and look at it and the suspension to see if anything sticks out. Did you hit a pothole?. The colder whether makes it easer to cause damage to rims and tires on lowered cars or cars with sport suspensions/packages.

it sounds like if you had a flat. check to see if your tire pressure is up to spec, it could be really low.

+1 Check your lugs. It's probably loose and commonly overlooked.

It could be a belt separation in the tire.
