Tips on breaking the car in?
Tips on breaking the car in?
Hi I am getting a B/B 6MT a week from Saturday (woohoo!) and was wondering if you guys have any tips on breaking the car in. As I understand it, it's 1200 miles but I have read from other cars that you should not drive for extended distances (how much is "extended"?), should not start or stop hard, and should not maintain a speed for very long. Is this true for the g35c? And if I can't drive for very long at a time, how am I going to get 1200 excruciating miles without pushing it???

Re: Tips on breaking the car in?
Some tips to remember:
1. Keep revs under 5K in any gear / don't exceed 100 MPH (?)
2. Short trips are good as they have varying revs
3. Long trips are OK (just don't build up 1200 mi on one trip)
3. No Hard starts (dropping clutch, etc)
4. Enjoy the car.
The purpose of break in is to allow all moving parts of the engine to seat themselves and wear in. The different revs on the engine create different stresses on engine parts that help them break in. Ensure that you have the oil changed after 1200 mi. The oil shipped with the car is mainly for storage and moderate driving.
So baby her until you reach 1200 mi or get a scratch, which ever comes first
.
Some other things to remember while under 1200 mi
1. No 4-wheel drifts through corners.
2. No 180 degree reverse-forward turns
3. No checking if the speed limiter exists
4. No off roading under any circumstances!!
Happy motoring

Sure, if you want to break in the car....just get a 'SlimJim' tool from your local locksmith and use it to pry open the door lock and it should unlock and now you have broken in the car!!!!!
Its so easy dude
hahahaha...
I think that we've established on this forum that engine break-in isnt too important, although transmission and other parts are very important to break-in correctly, such as brakes. For the first few hundred, do not drive for long distances, not longer than 15 minutes. After that its up to you, just dont be redlining and braking at full-force every stoplight...
Engines these days are tested extremely hard at the factory before they are dropped into their permanent home as far as i know. I've heard on this forum that they basically break-in at the factory...like at least a couple hundred miles...so basically just baby-it for a few hundred and then semi-baby it for that rest of the 1200 miles...it'll be fine, if not, the WARRANTY will take care of it!!!!!!!!!!!! Early congrats and good luck!

Re: Tips on breaking the car in?
"not longer than 15 minutes"? Is this really neccessary? What if it takes more the 15 minutes just to get home from the dealer? Also, let's say that I wanted to drive my new G35C from Los Angeles to San Diego (around 100 miles). What should I do then? Vary speeds? Get off the freeway once in awhile?
Re: Tips on breaking the car in?
Consistent with my other "screw the break-in" posts -- don't sweat it. I bought my car (6MT) at a dealer 130 miles from my house. I also had to make several more 2-3 hour drives in the first 1200 miles. I certainly see no problems with that. I now have 5000 miles and it just gets better every day.

Yea I plan on driving my Coupe from Dallas to Lubbock as soon as I get it (~350 miles). Hopefully the engine won't fall out in the road haha
