Radar Detector Install

I have a Passport 8500 on the way and I was about to buy a direct wire kit for it off eBay (under $11 shipped), but I need some help. I don't yet have my car (5.5 weeks and counting) and I need to verify if a 7'4" cord would be adequate to run from the mirror area, to the left along the window/roof line (tucked out of sight), down the edge of the door, and to the fuse box (it is under the driver side by the left foot, right?). I would think 7'4" would be plenty but before I buy this one I'd like some input.

Thanks

G35C2B,

Imagestation seems to have this new policy where they do not allow links.
Just copy-paste the url into a new browser window, it should work that way.

Let me know if you're still having problems.

Re: Radar Detector Install

7.5 feet should be enough. I initially used 15 feet and had a lot of slack. I then used 12 feet and had some slack. 7.5 feet should be fine.

I didn't use hardwire kit. I just used a RJ11 connector and 12 feet of RJ11 phone cable and hooked it into the smart display coiled cord. I hooked the coiled cord into the driver-side 12V power outlet and tucked the cable under the driver panel located under the steering column. Pretty stealth, no need to splice wires and preserved SmartCord display.

I also used the coiled lighter cord and 6 feet of telephone cord. My adapter between the coiled cord and the telephone wire sits under the VCD and trunk buttons. The coiled cord is looped around the steering wheel tilt lever to hold it up out of the way. Pretty easy to remove and use in another car, but no cords going across the windshield.

Re: Radar Detector Install

I might go the route of taking it to the fuse panel so I can have a separate fuse for it. Lots of options from the looks of it. I'd rather not "kill" the smart cord by splicing into it, just in case I want to take the unit to another car temporarily or sell it at some point.

I guess I don't place a lot of value on a remote for muting when the unit is at my eye level....why not use the unit itself?

Thanks for all the input!! Glad 7' 4" will work for my install.
