I've only noticed it outside the car when its running, specifically after the cars been running for a while (either around town or on the highway). The engine almost sounds likes a 4 cyl sometimes. Like a slight lifter rattle or ticking. Gets a bit louder if you rev it up. Didnt happen in the colder weather, but its noticeable now with the warmer weather. Running recc oil weight 5W30. Has the oil thinned out that much or is just the way the car sounds at idle?? Help!

sounds like detonation.. bad gas? bad coil?

if you have valve or timing chain noise, it tends to tick/rattle at idle as well. The bad one would be piston slap... FSM says it would be related to cold startup and driving. You would hear it coming from the bottom of the car, not the top end or front.

could also be a pulley bearing

 

Not the exhaust for sure. Sounds very close to the upper drivers side of engine. Cant hear it in the car, but its a little noticeable outside. May be nothing but it seems to me a $30K car shouldn't make any engine noise.

yea I get a little tick tick tick too. I dunno I m curious why it makes that noise too. But then again I've heard Mercedes' that make worse noises (lol)

 

This happens to me when I get home and pull into the driveway....I drive my G how a G should be driven and it seems like it rattles a little in idle. Also, when I shut the car off, I notice the rattling too. I run premium gas only (mobil or chevron) and change the oil every 3k
