let this be a lesson

So i let this friend try my car today, he has driven manuals before so i figured it would be ok. I told him to be nice and not rev it high at all. Well, he does and he slips the clutch at like 6000 rpms for like 3 seconds, realizes he is not going anywhere, shifts to second and revs it to 6000 again, letting the clutch slip. What follows is a most fowl clutch burnt smell. Is there anyway to tell how much life he took off of it? how long do they last anyways? It sucks cause i can feel it is not the same as before. It doesnt catch 1st gear as smoothly now, it shudders a little bit. I am so pissed. Is there any positive out of this though? like, is the clutch tougher than i think, will this one nasty burnout hurt?
Any comments would be nice.
Thanks

They say friends dont let friends drive drunk!!
Guess friends shouldnt drive friends cars either.

worst case here comes a clutch job, although possibly things will be ok, once it cools down again

Re: let this be a lesson

Hey all,
let me be more detailed here. I was so furious at the time and that "friend" was still at my place, so i wanted to vent to someone quickly and didnt give all the details.
My car is 3.5 months old and has 4700ish miles.
He basically reved it up to 6000ish and tried to drop it which wouldnt have been that bad except that he kind of freaked out under the power and didnt drop it he just kept it slipping going about 10 miles an hour. Then he puts it into second and does the same thing, lets it take up the 6000rpms instead of dropping it out. All in all, there was about 6-7 seconds of nasty slipping, then the hainous smell. The guy is an idiot, no idea what he is doing and after he told me he wouldnt rev it high. Besides the point. Now i just took it out and it still drives find but i notice a little difference when starting in first. I usually rev it to 1500 rpms and let it out for a gentle start. Before, it was smooth, now it shudders a little when it is grabbing, also, it gives off a little smell when i drive it now. Will this smell go away after it cools down? I dont want it smelling every time i drive it. To make it smooth, i have to take it up to 2000-2500 and let it out quicker. I am furious. Im more pissed about the smell, it is still in my car and it better leave because just last night i had a hot chick tell me how it still smells new. If it doesnt smell good anymore, i will be furious. Anyways, thanks for letting me vent. IM PISSED!!!!

Re: let this be a lesson

I fried my clutch on my 300zxtt, not like you (friend) did, but I did abuse it really bad once. Sorry to say, my clutch never felt the same again. I had to live with a 1st gear shutter & a little more throttle to get going. I'm sure the clutch surface and maybe the pressure plate & throwout bearing got glazzed (burnt). My clutch still lasted a long time, but it never felt the same again. As months & years go by, just beware that your clutch is not slipping (revs) when you are driving.

how much do you think it is to just get the pad or whatever replaced. im one of those people easily bothered by a sudden change in how it feels and might want to get it replaced?

Where were you when this was going on? What kind of an idiot asks to drive an expensive car, says he won't rev it, then revs at 6k and drops the clutch? I would've hit him in the face. What did he have to say afterward?

yes, the smell of your clutch will go away, probably faster than the "stink" of the Injen exhaust system on my G35c6mt!

Re: let this be a lesson

I let him drive it around my neighborhood. He is an idiot, i really dont think i can stand him anymore. He is one of those people that hasnt changed at all since high school (8 years ago) and he obviously has no respect. He has driven manuals before so i figured it would be alright, but i guess some people just dont get it, they just dont respect other peoples stuff.
He just said sorry and blah blah, "ive never done that before" blah blah. And in retrospect, i should have either hit him in the face or have him stop the car and while switching seats lock him out and leave him.

Re: let this be a lesson

When one replaces the clutch (remove tranny), you replace all three pieces. The clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Probably not cheap at the dealer (labor). You might want to think about putting in a beefer clutch (centerforce) which the dealer will probably say "no" unless its a stock Nissan clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Being that its your baby & new, an independent mechanic would be a scary thought to me.

I rarely let anybody drive my car, especially a manual, unless I know their driving habits very well.

Re: let this be a lesson

i let my brothers friend drive my old car. it was a 99 A4 1.8T 5spd and that asslicker drove it so rough. these people are those that take kindness for weakness and they're jealous inside. put everything aside, there is no reason (i mean absolutely no reason) for someone who knows how to drive a manual to do such a thing. i say cut his penile off and stick in his mouth.

Don't ever ever let your friend borrow your car. Have them rent the car or something instead. Damaging your car is one thing. Getting into an accident is another. What if your friend hit n run? Think about those stuff. Last year my friend totalled my car, and paid me half of what the car's worth. I tried my best not to let it hurt our friendship but in the long run it did. He doesn't even appreciate the fact that I took care of everything for him and all he did was sitting in his room until he finally gave me half of its price which took him 6 months to do so. I repeat, it's not worth it to let your friend borrow your car. In my case my friend "had to" borrow it cause he had to go somewhere.. but for a simple joy ride? Hell no, unless you are a multi millionare who doesn't care if your friend total one of your car..
