Towing with coupe
Re: Towing with coupe
The point that people CAN tow stuff with a Porsche is irrelevant. I mean you CAN attempt to drive your G offroad, but who would? The point is, we love our cars that much...to a point that we wouldn't even think about doing such a thing. Rent a pick up truck or something.

Re: Towing with coupe
You will probably have to have a hitch custom made from what I have read on these forums. But, if you read the owners manual, the g35 is only rated to tow 1000 lbs

It looks like you're receiving responses from a tough crowd in this forum, but I can understand both sides of the response.
For those of us that "baby" our G's, we would never think of putting undue strain on our vehicles. I don't think we're being snobs like one of the posts stated. Then there's the other side where some people see this as a nice looking vehicle and use it for its practical purposes. It looks like you're getting more responses from those of us that baby our G's. If you use it to tow, just be careful and make sure it can handle the towed weight.

Re: Towing with coupe
You could tow a small utility trailer, a tire trailer for racing, or a couple of small watercraft (jet skis). You can't tow a car behind a coupe.
When I moved across country, I put my stuff in a U-Haul, and put my car (a 92 Accord at the time) on a U-Haul trailer behind it. That won't work for you with 2 cars. You're going to have to find someone to drive your car, or hire a car shipping company. How are you moving your stuff? Does it all fit into both cars?
And for the rest of you: We're trying to be a helpful forum here. Answer his question.. whether or not he can tow a car. We don't need speculation on whether or not he should.

Really, I think the people that are insanely against the hitch are those that think the G is such the expensive car. Get over it. The G is not an expensive car, is not rare and once again if a beaufitul viper or a Porsche can do it, the G certainly can.

It has nothing to do with the price of the car. If the G were a $20K vehicle, I still wouldn't ever try to tow with it. Why? Simple- it was not designed to tow. Period.
BTW, I think guys with Vipers and Porsches that use them to tow are idiots. If you've got the kind of money to own one of those vehicles, then surely you've got the money to own a vehicle for proper towing.

Re: Towing with coupe
Guys with Vipers and Porsches are generally towing a small tire trailer to the race track. The race tires and tools are on the trailer, and the street tires are on the car. They're not idiots. They simply prefer to drive the car to/from the event rather than tow it behind a big truck. Especially if they have no other use for the truck and no place to park it.
Re: Towing with coupe
Being rear wheel drive, long wheelbase, torque at low rpms makes the G more than able to tow a reaonable amount fo weight under 2000 lbs. Frankly, I would think a two cycle trailer would be fine. Isn't the sedan rated at 2,500 pounds?
BTW, just because a person bought a viper, doesn't mean they can also afford a $30,000 (minimum) tow vehicle.
On another note, there are cross country "races", events where supplies are needed that would not / could not be carried in the G. A small trailer is needed for this.
I'm glad you baby your car. Stating the G can't tow and is too "pretty" a hitch is ludicrous, though. Best of luck and when I am looking for another G, I'll look for your used, yet babied G in 2 years.

Re: Towing with coupe
There is no way you could tow a car behind the coupe. The only thing I don't like about an FX45 is that it only has a 3500 lb towing capacity. This means as an SUV it can't even tow a trailer with a car on it. As a unibody car, the coupes towing capacity is far more limited. If you try to tow something to heavy you can damage the car with a very good possibility of twisting the frame.
For those who thing it would be a crime to put a hitch on a coupe are way off. Obviously they aren't into motorsports and have no plans to truely explore the limits of their cars. For the last 3 years I autocrossed and tracked evented a sports suspension Miata. I had a D'lan hidden hitch on the car. I built a small trailer to tow my wheels and tires with R compounds in addition to a jack, jack stands, tools and race gear all over. Ever try to get an extra set of wheels in a Miata to drive them 300 miles to an event?
Now think about the coupe. If you really care about a car then the last thing you would want to do is mess up a nicely finished leather interior with a dirty set of race wheels and tires. You sure as h*ll aren't going to get a set to fit in our trunks. The hitch was completely under the rear bumper and used an angled receiver in the Miata. When the receiver was unattached, you couldn't see it at all. Hopefully they will come out with a similar hitch for the coupe. I have a Hidden Hitch brand hitch on my SVO, which I also race, but it is visable below the rear bumper when unattached. As far as towing the trailer goes, loaded it weighed about 500 lbs and I would never notice it was there when driven. The car was also perfectly stable with at at 100 mph.
