Front Spoiler Install Observations

This is not a difficult task but it is a very time consuming one.

I am fairly mechanically inclined and I had help when needed from a friend who is an expert mechanic; who also had a garage full of tools, hydraulic jacks, and pneumatic tools for me to use. It took us three hours just for the spoiler! Now I know why my local Infiniti dealer wanted $300 to install it.

What you are doing is basically lining up the spoiler properly and drilling holes. However, it takes a 12 page manual with a lot of steps to accomplish it!

We jacked up the front of the car and took off the front wheels to get easy access to everything (this is optional but it made access much easier -especially while working under the car - but added more time to do the jacking & wheel removal). We spent a lot of time with the flimsy confusing templates, marking where to drill and holding the spoiler up to the bumper to double check exactly where to drill - it paid off. If you are doing this install, pay close attention to the directions as to where the templates go as this is key to a good final result and then double check it with the spoiler held up to the bumper.
Once you drill the four main holes in the bumper in the right spots the spoiler snaps on and you seem to done. But no....you now have to disassemble the under covers (about 18 bolts) under the car merely to get access to the two outer bolts on the spoiler. We only unbolted the front of the under covers and did not pull them off as the instructions specified (nor did we pull off the black under spoiler or wheel well clips). We were able to reach up to get nuts on those two outer spoiler bolts. The two inner bolts are easily reached from the top reaching down behind the grill or from the botton once the under cover is pulled back a little. Once the two outter bolts are on, you now reassemble the whole underside - jeez, what a lot of work to get to two bolts!
Still not done! Now you have to drill & attach the side screws at the wheel wells and drill the 8 holes under the bumper & install clips. This thing will never come off now! Finished!!!!!!

We also hoped to install the splash guards but by this time we were tired!. We did do the front splash guards because of the wheels already being off - took about 20 nimutes.
So the whole job was about 4.5 hours (1 hr. rounding up all need tools, jacking up the car and removing wheels, 3 hours for spoiler, 20 min. front splash guards).
The rear splash guards look pretty easy, but the wheels will definately need to be removed to get to the one spot to drill.

The final result looks great. The spoiler or lip as some refer to it, is actually termed a "protector" in the Infiniti instructions. In a way that is more descriptive as it is more of a lower bumper than a spoiler. It extends the bumper out a bit all around and it really does not hang down any lower than the stock bumper (I know a lot of us were concerned about ground clearance). Oh yeah, it perfectly covered up all of the scratches I had on my lower bumper from previously hitting parking lot stops and low driveways.

I hope this helps anyone planning to do the job.

Thanks for the post! It's great to hear that the scratches were covered and I can appreciate the effort having done an install for a Passport ZR-3. Now we all want to see the pictures!

Just FYI. I put my rears on without removing the wheels. I just used a LONG bit extension and drilled the hole at an angle. It is tricky but it can def be done. I just really hated the idea of getting out the jack and taking off the wheels.

Re: Front Spoiler Install Observations

Hey GSG,

I tell you I go back and forth about the front lip. Grubbs will do it for $425 or something close to that, but I'm so on the fence about the looks. Its hard making the call based on still pictures. Does anyone have any video they could post that shows a front lip on a Diamond Graphite Coupe?

Thanks

yo Fred that [censored] looks hot, got to get me some now.

The front lip looks like the color is a little off, does it match and it's just the way the light is reflecting or is it a little darker.

Wassup Craig. Good observation on your part, yes the lip seem a little lighter in color because of the brand new finish and the fact that my G is not garage kept and needs a new coat or two of Zaino. At first I thought they sent me the wrong color but I checked the code and it was the right one. Overall I'm happy with the end result, besides you can't beat the price on DIYs.

Re: Front Spoiler Install Observations

how much lower do you think the lip makes the front of the car, compared to without the lip? I'm afraid I would be scratching it all the time.

Installing the lip is NOT hard. Try it. I posted my tips and it resides in the FAQ area. You do not have to disassemble the under body of the car. 4.5 hours????
Shucks, I could have put 5 spoilers on in that time.

Anyone in Va Beach, Norfolk area wants help to do this, send me a PM and we'll get it done, you buy the beer! )

Re: Front Spoiler Install Observations

i had to re-drill one of the holes in the mid because i couldn't get the spoiler to fit even i tried to stretch it out. i did used the template and followed 12 page instruction, but holes didn't match up perfect. i put 2 screw near fenders and 4 lug nuts to tighten up the spoiler, i didn't drill anything underneath. i was happy with the result overall and it wasn't difficult at all.. couldn't imagine myself paying so much for front lip install.

Re: Front Spoiler Install Observations

It's interesting to see all of the comments.

1). The OEM lip and the splash guards are subtle in appearance. That is what I liked about them. Definitely not rice. If you are looking for a dramatic change get another brand. However, I must admit I like the car with or without the spoilers, etc.
2). On my car (BS) the colors match fine. However, one thing I never really noticed before on my car is that the bottom panel that runs from the front fender along the bottom side of the door and to the back fender is a darker silver than the paint on the car (I don't know if other colors have this issue). The front splash guard sits along that line and since the splash guard is BS, it doesn't match the panel it sits on. This makes it stick out more, which may be good or bad depending on your opinion.
3). The guy who got a dealer to put it on for $50, wow! A no brainer!!
4). If I had to do the front lip again I doubt it would take me more than 1 hour- it's a lot easier once you have done it!
