Re: If you had to choose?
I would say sti, I see evo's all over around here. only on occasion do i see the sti. But the subaru dealership here said they don't allow test drives in the sti. i'd never buy a car i didn't get a chance to drive first. and doesn't the evo have tranny problems?

Re: If you had to choose?
It has a clutch and transfer box problem. I agree I wouldn't want to buy a car without test driving it first either. I'm going to try and test drive one this weekend, but if not i'll see if i can get someone in the sti forums to maybe give me a test drive or at least a ride in it. So i can see what it is like. I see very few evos in jersey. At least in my area. I love the way it looks, the fact it has a sunroof and the way it drives (test drove one). I just have a problem spending 30 gs on a car and knowing there is a manufacturer's defect with the car that if i bring it back for them to fix it, they will turn me down and probably rip my warrenty to shreds. And I will not be driving it aggresively.
Re: If you had to choose?
I'd say STi. It seem the Evo wins all the comparison tests between the 2 cars but all those magazines/websites admit that the STi is a better real world car. Unless you're getting a car for track use only, it seems to me the STi is a little better for most people.

Re: If you had to choose?
They are both great little cars, if you do not mind the cheap on the insides. I would go STI. You have 2.5 litres versus 2.0, and are running a lot less boost so less strain on the motor. Basically a little bit better platform for upgrade mods if you are going to make them. Both are bouncy/choppy on the street and a compromise car. You will never be able to make it luxurious, and at best borderline comfortable. For the money, stock, they are very good at the track compared to almost anything else at the same price point, and better than a lot of things that cost more.

Re: If you had to choose?
Get a different model, say the regular WRX, if you don't intend to drive it aggressively. Then you can spend the money you saved on mod'ing the WRX.
The STi is meant to be driven aggressively, that is why they made it.

Re: If you had to choose?
It all depends if you are talking stock vs. stock or modied. Stock only, I would go STI. It just has more power and torques out of the box. The EVO has better handling, is lighter weight and has better weight distribution since the engine isn't completely in front of the front axle.
If you are looking at doing upgrades, then there is no comparison. The EVO is definitely the choice. You can get 340-360 AWHP reliably out of an EVO with bolt-ons(intake, intercooler, cam gears, downpipe, exhaust and fuel controller) and not even changing the boost. Alamo's car with stock internals, a mild turbo upgrade running 20 psi pump and cams(in addition to the bolt-ons above) puts out 440 AWHP. STI's by comparison have far fewer gains from bolt-ons and there are major problems running high boost. Since the Subby is horizontally opposed, the stress on the crank is far greater than on an in-line or V engine. As a result, even forged cranks come apart when running 20 psi of boost. You can get big numbers out of a Subby though, you just have to run a much bigger turbo at lower boost to keep the stress down. The down side to this is that lag starts becoming a major issue when trying to make big numbers.

Re: If you had to choose?
Wow Loren, you really seem to know your stuff. Maybe I should explain my situation a bit more. I'm 21 just got outta school. Making decent money and I got 20k to put down on whatever car i buy. My choices are the evo (I've wanted it for 2 years), the sti, the wrx, the g35 and the z. Only problem is this car has to serve as a daily driver for about 300 miles a week.
I would get an evo hands down, but I don't feel like dealing with all the crap with the warrenty and the bad clutch and transfer box.
The sti's styling has really grown on me, but I still don't think it looks great. I like subaru's reliablity and i don't plan on modding much if at all, but who knows. If i get the car I might.
The z and the g are both incredible, but i need 4 seats and I feel like I want just an all out performance car for my first car. I can get the luxury later.

Re: If you had to choose?
The isn't just a luxury car, its sport and luxury. Why settle for only sport when you can have both in a geat reliable package? But if i had to chose between the two it would be the STI, cause reliability and service should always top your list unless you have a reliable back-up to fall back on. But why even go through the headache and worry. Just get a G35 coupe like I have been saying and put a procharger on it next year...I mean..uhhhh.. hey who are you....
Hi Joe
P.S. They g35 coupe does have four seats, just tall people can't fit in the back comfortably.
Edited by 96max5sp on 03/19/04 01:39 PM.

4 door performance with luxury ever occur to you?

I would pick the EVO. The STI is hideous looking.
