Car & Driver Dyno test
Car & Driver Dyno test
The tests were done at Dinan BMW with Steve Dinan. They did various runs with the same car and got HP readings ranging from 330-420HP. A Home Depot fan blowing at 10 mph into the front of the car gave them +37 HP. They brought in a industrial fan capable of 38,000 CFM at 75 mph and blew it into a duct into the radiator, result 411 HP vs 371 w/o. Dinan claims he would get another 4-5 hp if he ran in the morning with an ambient temp 10 degrees cooler.
Bottom line that I gathered is that unless you can maintain constant controlled ambient temp & humidity as well as air flow and engine temp through all the runs you make then the dyno runs people make after adding a mod are probably uselss. All in all an interesting article.

Re: Car & Driver Dyno test
Interesting indeed. Does this suggest that perhaps a G-Tech or any of those other performance meters are potentially more accurate than a dyno, because it measures real-world performance, rather than a simulated environment?
There is also one more thing about BMW + dyno. I believe the M3 automatically limits itself to a certain rear wheel speed or engine speed if there isn't enough air being sucked in the front, which is why they use that industrial fan. So basically, it's almost as if the car knows it's on a dyno (or at least that it's not really moving).
