60mph in second gear?
60mph in second gear?
i have a 6mt coupe and i was wondering if we are supposed to be able to hit 60 in second gear...i read that the car goes up to 61 in second gear in a magazine, but my car sure cant do that...i can only get to about 55...or less..before i redline..just wondering if my car is not in proper working order. thanks guys.

Re: 60mph in second gear?
The 6MT coupe does hit over 60 in second gear...
get on it in first to the redline, shift, get right back on it in second to the redline, shift....
You can't grandma it, drive that bad boy.

Re: 60mph in second gear?
I have tried multiple times and have not been able to before the computer cuts in. I'm wondering why how hard you launch or get on it would make that big of a difference. Maybe a few MPH, but not 5
Re: 60mph in second gear?
Slowly rev up the engine in second until you hit the rev limiter. If the limiter kicks in beofre 60, then I would say you got a problem.

yea that would make a difference on how fast he launches and shifts.
Maybe he's trying this on a incline he's trying this going up hill on a 15% slope.

Re: 60mph in second gear?
Stew,
I agree with your advice on this. . . . Maybe I am missing something, but what difference would it make how fast or slow the "launch" is when it pertains to maximum speed in each gear? Isn't this a fixed number... For example, if a car's top speed it 155, then it should go 155 regardless of whether it is shifted at the rev limit in each gear preceeding top gear or at 4k, right?

Re: 60mph in second gear?
That is what I was saying. However, I did recenty manage to get to 62+, but I think the speed was still increasing after the computer cut it. Like a coast past and an immediate decline. It is very hard to shift right before the computer cuts in and watch the speed and tach.
Re: 60mph in second gear?
A governer is a speed limiter.
A rev-limiter is what kicks in at a certain point (usually a few hundred RPM's above the perceived redline) and prevents it from hurting the engine. It's all controlled by computer now. Yes, the G has a rev limiter.
And to answer the other questions about launches helping somone get to 60 - that is inconsequential. The car's gearing is a constant ratio that means that at a certain gear it's always doing the same speed correlating to an RPM. In other words, if the car does 3000 RPM in 5th Gear at 70 MPH then it will always do that RPM at that speed in that gear.

Another Question
It seems that the folks @ Infiniti are more focused on the 0-60 times by setting the ratios so the car will hit 60 in second, but it would seem to me that if you were racing a 1/4 mile you would be better off to shift @ the RPM where you achieve the higest horsepower. So- is it better to shift @ redline or at the RPM where you have the higest HP?
Re: Another Question
Almost all cars (there have a been a few exceptions, I remember that most mags and drivers could get better times on a certain year Mustang GT by shifting it like 800 RPMS below redline) are driven the quickest by shifting at redline. You have to remember, even though those last few hundred RPM's may have slightly less HP (you'd have to get a dyno to really look at it) they are in a much lower ratio than the gear above it.
