60mph in second gear?
Re: Another Question
A lot of cars do that... (remeber , it's not 0-60 it's 0-100KM/H in Japan, so 62 makes even more sense) But, also, alot of cars have a second gear shift point right around that area, especially if they have six gears.

Re: 60mph in second gear?
Are you guys testing the mechanicals or the warranty?
Try 3rd gear, you can definately hit 60 or even higher in 3rd gear. (and there are still more gears to try) There is just no point to this 2nd gear exercise since you're already past peak torque. The rate of acceleration is decreasing past the torque peak.
All RPM/gear/speed relationships are fixed with a manual transmission. Unless Nissan changed some gear ratios in mid production, all MT6 Coupes will hit the same speed at redline.
Some may get there quicker, depending on driver and engine condition. I suspect any difference is in reading the gauges.

Re: 60mph in second gear?
I dont believe that the maximum shift points for the g35 are at redline (for 0-60 times for all gears, whether you do it in two or three shifts. I really feel you need to get out of first fast (like 3-4k,) but granted this is based on speeds obtained on the same entrance ramp using different shift points. I also dont think redline is the maximized shift point in some other cars, for instance, someone shortly after initial release of the cars, posted max shift points for audi tt's (both engines) on the audi site after dyno testing. The numbers were considerably different for each engine and for each gear despite the same redlines. I
Re: 60mph in second gear?
To be sucessful in going fast, you must keep the car within the engine's powerband as stated in a previous post. This goes for the upshift and down shift... This is why they use "heel to toe" driving techniques while breaking into corners. Going to redline prior to shifting in a G will probably drop you into highest torque/HP point in most gears. It usually goes from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, and with a 6 speed manual usually from 3rd to 4th as well because the gearing in the transmission is developed around the "torque points" created by the engine/drivetrain combination for acceleration within 'reasonable means'. Manufacturers are inclined to believe, as they should be, That no one is going to need to maintain the largest degree of acceleration from 4th gear to 5th gear in a street car (it's kinda sorta, you know illegal). But this is all completely sujective to change. Any change to the drivetrain or engine may change where these shift points lay.
For example, say you add a few pieces that increase power such as exhaust (headers on back) and heads, your engine is now breathing differently, detonating differently and flowing differently that it was from the factory. As a direct result, your shift points will have to change to accomodate the new power curve and maintain acceleration through the "sweet spot".
The same goal still remains: keep it in the gears where it pulls the most.

Re: 60mph in second gear?
I agree, to get the most out of your gears and peak engine power, you have to shift beyond the 'sweet spot' so that after the motor has slowed to accommodate the next gear, you're not too far away from that 'sweet spot'. Luckily the max H/P rpm and the max Torque rpm are spread apart by almost 2k rpm's so it's easy to stay within 'reach' of that sweet spot. You guys with 6 gears are even better off than we with 5.

As far as the car not attaining say 60 or 62 mph's in second gear: this could be due to a number of things (assuming the motors are running OK) To my mind differences (even slight) in wheels and tires could account for variations, as could errors in Speedometer and Tachometer. From my experience there are no 2 cars exactly the same. My $.02

This may be true for that gear, but you are not taking into account the gearing's effect on the acceleration. Simply put. Even though you may not have as much torque (and torque is not the only thing, HP is a big player at the higher RPM ranges, mathmatically, HP and torque always cross at a certain RPM) at say 5K rpm as you do at 6K RPM.. the engine has a better accelration ratio in 2nd gear than it does in Third gear. YOu always have to take that into account.
Along with what the other guys were saying about staying in the "sweet" spot of the engine, it is almost always best to shift at or around redline for the best accelration. There are exceptions (I hadn't heard anything about the TT, but it's possible there. I Have heard things before like I mentioned, about a certain year Mustang GT) to the rule, but for the most part, that's how it works.
