Re: y-pipe question

would the addition of a y-pipe to the fujitsubo exhaust change the sound of the exhaust? i know it'll change the sound of the stock exhaust if you just add the y-pipe.

Yes! Any change you make to any part of the intake/exhaust will change the stock tone. Each change is different. Each exhaust will make a different sound. Each high flow cat will make a different sound, so the best you can do is mod everything EXCEPT for the exhaust, listen to your car w/ all of the mods on it, and then try to see if you want a deep tone exhaust or a loud exhaust, etc... Even this is very difficult to do, since the Exhaust really makes the other mods AMPLIFY the sound by quite a bit. Heck I heard the Injen exhaust on PimpinPearls coupe and I thought that was louder than my RT Cats and Z-Tube/Popcharger combo.

Al503 stated: "...I'm holding off on the cats because I've heard the RT's and they are loud as heck. I'm not willing to sacrifice the noise levels to get those horses."

Al, did you hear the RT Cats on a car that had the Z-Tube and JWT Popcharger? I'm totally confused about everyone saying how "loud" the cats are. I could not be happier w/ them. When I have the wife and 2 little kids in my car I can have a conversation at 3500 rpm's just like before. No drone, no burning smell (due to me cleaning off the sticker-glue residue), and no rattles. The sound of the cats changes the pitch of the exhaust to something that can be described as "raspy", but I have a hard time using that word. I usually think of "raspy" in a bad light, but the cats and intake together actually sound really GOOD.

Now I'm off to wash the G in preparation to install the Crawford Plenum...

Re: y-pipe question

Hey Neff,
I heard the cats on a coupe with the z-tube only. No popcharger. IMO, they are very loud. They drowned out the exhaust note that I like so much and there was a little rasp around ~2500-3000 rpm. The rasp was not as loud as I thought it would be though. I think I could get used to that but the total increase in volume was a little too much for me.

DED or Demonteverde, please respond to AL503 post. I have NO CLUE what he's talking about when he referrs to "LOUD". Both of these guys were in my G today after the Crawford Plenum install, and they can tell you their impressions of the sound...

Re: y-pipe question

Hey neff. Sorry my ears don't agree with yours. I'm not the only one who thinks so either as multiple posts on my350z.com can attest to. I think if the search was up there and you typed in 'cats' and 'loud', you'd get a bunch of hits on the RT's with some z owner's actually removing them because of the noise. (You have to remember that those guys are much more amenable to increased db's than most G owners are.) Even Jason@performance, who has about the hardest hardcore mods on his car repeatedly describe them in his own words as "LOUD."

I'm happy that the cats are working out for you and it was one of the things that was on my to get list as you know. However, after I heard it with my own (perhaps defective) ears and not just what I've read on a forum, the increased db's just wouldn't be worth the extra ponies I would get.

Even with extensive dynamating (which helped out a lot), I still get a lot of road noise coming into the cabin so much so that my girlfriend and I have to raise our voices slightly at times at highway speeds. The cats would add a few more db's that would make it a little harder to hold a relaxed conversation.

I propose we agree to disagree on this one.

Re: y-pipe question

No problem, I've got REALLY BIG EARS, and think I can hear better than everyone else . I was actually referring to the difference the air filter (JWT in my case) makes to the sound. The JWT air filter actually growls deep under acceleration. This helps to cover up, or tone down the raspiness of the RT cats. That's all I was trying to say. You are right when you use the word "raspy" as that is the best description I can think of, but would definitely recommend your friend adding the JWT Popcharger to his/her setup.

Happy Easter!
