y-pipe question
what aftermarket y-pipe would you guys suggest for the fujitsubo exhaust? would the addition of a y-pipe change the sound of the exhaust at all? any input would be appreciated.

I chose the JIC Y-Pipe because Jason at Performance Nissan has seen both and swears that the JIC has better construction, appears to be free'r flowing, and is about the same price as the Fujitsubo Y-Pipe. I'm only repeating what I read, but he seems to be right about almost everything he posts on FA. Oh yeah, there has been a back order of JIC Y-Pipes (made in Japan) and they should be arriving in a couple of weeks. Now is a good time to buy, as I've been waiting for well over a month for mine to show up.

ducatiguy has the both the Fujitsubu exhaust and Y-pipe, I think, and I love the sound. I think I'm going to stick with that when I order.

I know, I love the sound of his exhaust also, but everyone says the JIC Y-Pipe is built better or something. Should I get the oem front lip spoiler from grubbs or a y-pipe for my fujitsubo exhaust? :-)

i have the fujitsubo Y-pipe in my closet and waiting for the Fujitsubo exhaust I ordered from Gruppe-S.
Once I get it, everything will be installed and I'll post pics/review

You must choose... either looks or performance. For me it's a no brainer. I get SO MANY looks in the stock configuration of the G, changing out the exhaust and intake components only makes people LOOK to see where that really cool sound is coming from and then they STARE and STARE. FYI, I e-mailed JIC and got a response from "Ben". He told me that the JICY-Pipe and exhaust combined give between 5-8 rwhp on the G35. He also said that he believes most of the gains come from the Y-Pipe and the sound change comes from the rest of the exhaust. Well I'm all about performance, so I only ordered the Y-Pipe for now. Also, before modifying the Y-Pipe I'd seriously consider changing out the plenum and cats. Those 2 mods along with the intake, seem to be the best 3 breathing mods that you can do for our cars. The exhaust mod is not bad, but the flywheel might even come before the exhaust IMO. I guess it all depends on what you want.

I am very intersted in hearing about the Y pipe. If that installation is done in isolation PLEEEEZE comment in detail. That should cost like 100 bucks installed right?

I don't think it should cost $100. When I was changing my pulley, I looked at the connections for the y-pipe because I have the Jic coming hopefully sometime this month. There really isn't much to it. A mechanic on a lift could change the y-pipe out in literally 10 minutes. On my back with the car on jackstands, I could see 30-40 minutes, from start to finish.
What neffster said about the power gains is true. The y-pipe will most likely give you most of the gains while the rest of the exhaust is more for sound.

What about the cats - i would love to see results isolated and together for the cats and Y pipe. I am seriosly interested in exhaust improvements without spending money or getting new catback or even muffler. There are choking points that if fixed I believe will provide the same gains a a $1500 stainless catback system. I think you get better sounds too but prob not sweet like borla...which is fine for me and my sleeper sedan.
Also some comments I;ve seen are that the cats could be replaced with a small tube muffler and still work...does this make sense to have 3 mufflers and no cat? legal?

yeah, the bottlenecks are the cats and the y-pipe. Some would include the headers also, but they are expensive to get and install.
I'm holding off on the cats because I've heard the RT's and they are loud as heck. I'm not willing to sacrifice the noise levels to get those horses.
You're talking about the test pipes. They don't contain catalytic converters and you will get a nasty smell from your exhaust. The additional gains from test pipes is not worth the polution and smell IMO.
Any aftermarket cat is not legal whether they are carb approved or not. The only legal way to switch out your cats is if they become damaged. Even then you should replace them with OEM cats.

i got a price quote from a high end performance shop about getting a new y-pipe installed. they quoted me about $30, not bad at all.

areddy14: Since the fujitsubo exhaust is an 80mm exhaust system I would suggest getting a 80mm y-pipe to match the increased diameter. This gives you quite a bit of choices. JIC, Fujitsubo, Ultimate Racing, and Japtrix. Out of all of them I think the general consensus is that the JIC has the best design and looks to be the freest flowing. The Fujitsubo wouldn't be a bad choice either but at almost the same price I'd go JIC. As far as sound the new exhaust system is going to alter your sound quite a bit more than the y-pipe alone.
