Whats the "S" there for?

Whats the "S" there for?
I noticed today on my G that when I have it in "D" it just says D in the screen.

When i'm in triptronic it shows what gear your in and has a little "M" to the right of the number.. Under the "M" I can see an outline of an "S" under it.

How come this never lights up and what is it there for?
