Door Ding!
Door Ding!
I wake up this moring and go to my car to discover a one inch deep scratch, and a black paint mark above it also an inch long. The scratch created a small dent. Does anyone know how much something like this costs to fix?
Re: Door Ding!
It's very reasonable. Look for a paintless dent removal outfit near you. If you take it to them it's usually around $35-$50 per dent and you will never notice or find the area of repair. Find someone who has a good track record. Not to worry, it's the new science and works great. Had it done on my Girlfriend's BMW 3 series and I swear I can't find the original spot of repair. However if the scratch is very deep, you will need either some touch up or paint repair.

Re: Door Ding!
I have had 3 door dings removed by the www.dentdoctor.com paintless ding removers. I was charged about 150 for it. I think they charged like 90 for the first one and 30 each additional. I might have gotten ripped off because they didnt even have to open up the door panel. They just stuck their tool in the door thropugh the window opening and worked the dent out from there. Results were 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 for the larger ding because I can still kinda see where the ding used to be but no one else can so I guess its worth it. For smaller dings the results are usually flawless.

Re: Door Ding!
In FL, I paid about $100 to have a really nasty door dent repaired using a paintless dent removal process. The guy was recommened by my local Infiniti dealer. He said that it was really deep (right on the door line / trimline?) and that it would probably still be noticeable after the repair. Only I can notice the dent now - a slight 'orange peel' look to the paint where the dent was. All in all I would still recommend a paintless dent repair rathar than having the integrity of the paint compromised.

Re: Door Ding!
If I use paintless repair how do they fill in the scratch? Also, if it is painted how does that affect the "integrity of the paint?" I am not too familiar with the process involved.
Re: Door Ding!
Sorry I missed the part about the scratch. The ding would be paintless but the scratch will likely require paint. My recommendation is to try a product called Langka (www.langka.com). Their product is used in conjunction with a blob of the factory touchup paint. First you 'blob' your factory paint along the scratch (or chip) and let it dry. Then use a couple of drops of Langka with a credit card-like plastic thing to rub the blob flush with the scratch. Their website explains in more detail.
I have used Langka to repair numerous chips in my paint. You may have to do this a couple of times over the same area to get it right until you get the hang of it. At first I kept smoothing the blob below the chip recess and had to add more paint and rub again until I got it perfect.
Regarding the integrity of the paint, many body shops and my Infiniti dealer have advised against the traditional body shop repair because they would have the re-spray the affected area which normally requires the entire body panel to be repainted. In addition to the expense, they claim that there are paint matching and adhesion problems.
Good luck.
