Hey,
I'm happy to announce that I'm attending my very first autocross event on Sunday (April 18th) !! I am a member of the NJ Chapter of the BMWCCA (BMW Car Club of America) and they are having a Novice Autocross Event. At first when I signed up, it was full, but one of the organizers e-mailed me today, stating he had an open spot and I jumped on it. It's going to take place in South Plainsfield, NJ and it is going to be my very first event. The initial hours are spent on teaching us newbies how to drive autocross-style and then we get to run on a track, I believe with an instructor (solo, time-based, track made out of cones).
Either way, me and my G are going and I can't wait!! I'm just so excited that on Sunday I'm going to truly see what my car can do!!
I will try to take lots of pictures and I'll let you all know how it goes. =)
Anybody got any advice, based on experience for events like these?

Are you going to mount a camcorder? If not, take lots of pics. Good luck and stay safe.
2 G or NOT 2 G, there is no question!
'04 Coupe 6MT: DG on BLK, Prem, Sport, Nav, Custom Tint, K&N Intake/Filter, Gordgee's Grounding Gear SOON!
--License Plate: RANDYS G...say HI if you see me!

I was thinking about doing that, except I don't have a camcorder and I don't have a Sticky Pod. =(
I will take as many pictures as I can, though!
Thanks for the gl!

It truely is an incredibly fun experience. I did my first event 2 weekends ago. The car can definately turn some good times in its stock form. I'm going to one next weekend also. I think i'm hooked

Does autocrossing wear out the tires pretty quick? Also, if I ever attend one of them, will I get laughed off the course for having a 5AT? I guess those are the two things that would keep me from going to one.
I think autocrossing should be fun. I'm actually going to Mazda Rev It Up in May to experience some autocrossing myself. Maybe after that I'll be itching to do it in my G coupe.

Well, tire wear depends on the tires themselves as well as how hard you drive them. I doubt I'll be going over 60mph in my novice autocross event on Sunday, so I'm not worried about tire wear in my own situation.
As for the transmission, I'm sure it's not a problem. Just use manual mode so you can control the gears...I'm sure that if you're serious about autocross (regardless of your tranny), everyone else will be too. I'll let you know if I see any auto cars there, too.

I still don't have my G35c, but I have and do autox in my Celica. Wear on the tires, yes definitely, but we're not talking about 1 set of tires gone in one afternoon. I can say that even after one entire autox season, my OEM Celica tires were ok.
A/T in autox, I personally prefer a manual mode auto in autox, some of my friends disagree though, but like said before, most people are pretty serious in autox events and very respectful, you won't get laughed at. I had never autox'd in my life before and since the 1st time I did it, I've been hooked. I'm even getting a new helmet soon, loaner helmets stink. =P

Congrats! I have been autocrossing the past year. So far none of the 350 Z's have beat me. I am running a 5AT with Kuhmo Victorracers and regularly finish 4th in my class. I can't quite catch up with the S2000 or the RX-8's or that BMW. Understeer can be throttle controlled generally and the shifting is not a problem since most autocross courses are done completely in 2nd gear. Stock G35 tires will not perform very well. The most important upgrade you could do is have a set of dedicated R compound tires. Good luck.

When you say stock tires, do you mean the 17" or the 18"? Or both?

Both. You will pick up 3 or 4 seconds by going to an R compound tire. Helps make this lousy driver look better!
