87 or 91 octane?
Re: 87 or 91 octane?
DED is a degreed Environmental Engineer who is a gear head to boot. He knows about this topic real well and has discussed in great detail on FreshAlloy. From what I remember, the lower octane WILL NOT hurt your G one bit. It will allow the knock sensors to get a healthy workout, and you can (or will) lose horsepower, but you will not be doing irreparable damage to your beloved car. My theory is run the highest octane, 91 in CA or 93 in FL. It will cost you about $150.00 a year more if you go ~15000 miles per year. Small price to pay to tap into the full potential of your G if you ask me.
IM DED or do a search on FA for more detail.

Re: 87 or 91 octane?
Octane represents the ability to resist pre-detonation. Your car has sensors tha detect this and adjust your timing accordingly. There is one optimal crank angle to produce the most power and if you run lower octanes your crank will not be in a position of optimal leverage because your sensors have adjusted the timing to prevent pre-detonation (knocking). At higher RPMs it becomes more critical, that is why the owners manual cautions against higher speeds and revving when using 87. Don't use 87 if you can help it. If you do, go easy on her.

There is a Sunoco by me in Philly that has 100 Octane and it is like 4.89 a gallon (the last time I passed by).

I use Sunoco 94 ultra and nothing else. Not to sound like a jerk or anything but if you are concerned about gas and gas prices honestly you should have bought a Honda civic dont put the cheap sh$t in the G have some pride.

Paul,
LHV is the measure of energy content (Lower Heating Value). I think you were thinking latent heat of vaporization? Ask you thermo proff.
Lower octane does not mean lower LHV.
Although 87 probably won't hurt the engine, there is no reason to give the knock sensor a workout. Use 93.

Re: 87 or 91 octane?
As a rule of thumb, you can use the lower octane as long as the car doesn't ping. As others have noted, there is a knock sensor on the G35 that will retard timing if it detects knocking. But this also mean performance will be reduced as well. But before you rush out and put in race gas (100+ octane), keep in mind that running higher octane will not result in any performance gain. So just stick with 91/93.

. 91 octane sucks! Actually it doesn't real seem to effect my 'G' but on on my LS1 it pinged as soon as CA went to 91 octane
