87 or 91 octane?

Hey all.....do any of you guys put 87 octane in your g35's or stick with what is recommended...91!?! Or do any of you use 89? If you put 87 in the car, will it honestly really hurt the engine over time? Thanks for the responses in advance!

isn't 93 a.k.a. "supreme" or "premium"? i thought most gas stations usually have that triplet (regular, plus, and premium), even though around here i have seen only a handful stations with only 87 and 89. near chicago, i've seen 99.

Re: 87 or 91 octane?

Yes, it will hurt your g35 to use 87 octane. lower octane gas has a lower LHV, which means that the gas has a greater tendancy to explode under pressure. In a high compression engine like the VQ, this can cause engine knock, where the gas ignites and forces the piston down while it is still traveling up. This is known as engine knock and will destroy your pistons and connecting rods. I saw a hole blown through a piston last semester in a thermodynamics engine lab. It looked bad.

I believe the Sedan can run 87 safely but sacrificing a little performance, but not the Coupe.
I run 91 in my Coupe and it runs fine.
Most Sedan and Coupe owners here run premium or super premium in their rides.

I use 93 octane. Don't use 87 octane for your G35 Coupe unless you have no other choice. If you have to use 87, only fill up to find another gas station.

Hess, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and a few other stations carry 93 where I live. Sometimes the stations that charge a penny or two more than the others have 93 instead of 92 or 91 on the premium end.

Re: 87 or 91 octane?

They have a backup program on the ECU that'll back out timing to allow the car to safely run on 87 octane... However, 91 octane is defintely recommended.

Nothing touches my car but 76 Premium. You got a nice performance car, treat it right. I wish they sold 93 in my area.

I use 93...nothing less touches my baby. I'm not going to take the risk in order to save a couple of cents.
