Re: radar detector.. which one is the best?

Agreed. Either they were not shooting their guns or they were using laser and you weren't one of their targets. Laser detection is absolutely useless as far as I'm concerned. I get so many false signals with mine and if a cop's hitting the car ahead of you, you MIGHT pick it up depending on how the laser beam is diffused or deflected. Otherwise if your laser detection goes off and you see a cop up ahead, it's too late brother, you're toast.

You get a lot of false laser signals? What kind of radar detector do you have?

What is POP mode?

The V1 doesn't have POP detection mode?

Some of those faulse laser signals you are picking up may be coming from the new cruise control systems on the Mercedes, Lexus etc.

With all the talk about POP radar, here's a link to an article off the V1 site that I thought was pretty good regarding the unreliability of POP:

RWJ,

While that may be true. I don't think the guy/girl that got pulled over 2 cars ahead of me this week knows that. My 8500 only alerted for a second but the Trooper still pulled the car over and I 'assume' gave a ticket out while I and the car in front of me counted our blessings.

If I get the V1 and get pulled over without the V1 even going off, then I will know it was POP.

I will definitley fight the speeding ticket then.

Police Scanners: I was going to buy one of these(the beartrackers), but I browsed a few beartracker forums, and the concern that many people on there had was that many cops have begun upgrading to digital. The current beartrackers dont do digital and are thus, useless. i believe the term they used was TRUNKING. if anyone has any knowledge in this field, please enlighten us on it, and on the current situation of these trunking units...such as their availability. this is definitely something we can use in our war against tickets.

Boy, I guess I am confused. How are the cops detecting radar detectors if they're not detecting the actual circuitry emissions? A radar detector is a receiver device, not transmitter. Realizing of course, like others have said in this thread, radar detectors to put out a minute amount of signal. BTW, radar detectors are only illegal in DC and Virginia on the east coast.

Most receivers use an internal oscillator and mixers to down-convert the signal from the Ka band (RF) to a much lower and more manageable intermediate frequency (IF). The detector-detectors pick up those internal oscillators.

My opinion (and many others) may be useless since I've never owned an 8500 but based on my own experiences, even if the V1 was $200 more than the 8500, I'd still pick the V1.

Not too sure about the 8500 but the V1 has TWO distinct detectors (front and back) which probably is the main reason for the cost difference. One comparison test I'd like to see are for signals coming from behind the detectors. I'd suspect the V1 would have a significant advantage in picking up fast-moving cruisers from behind(?).

One of our news stations recently reported that the California Highway Patrol has instituted a new targeted-enforcement project to crack down on speeding in selected areas. They have been putting a lot of extra cars into specific areas, writing a batch of tickets, and then moving the extra units on to other areas. I recently ran into one of those batches of cars with my V1. My detector went off and showed me multiple signal sources (thank you bogey counter). I passed one car that was busy issuing a citation and, as I was passing, my arrows showed that the signal moved beside and then behind me - but there was still a source ahead of me. I continued to cruise and sure enough there was another car hidden in the shadows of an overpass. There was another constant signal but it was behind me and was trailing for a while but then faded away. I assumed it was a CHP traveling in my direction who had finally pulled over another victim or he stopped to back-up one of the other officers. I never saw the car but based on the arrows I was pretty sure that was the case.

If you're looking for the best detector - price independent - I'd definitely choose the V1. If you're budget-conscious then get the 8500. Based on the reviews you're still getting a great detector and you might not miss what you've never had (meaning the arrows) ...

I have the Escort Solo S2. Very nice unit but I do get a fair amount of false laser signals. I live near an airport and that may be contributing to it too. Not really sure.

Re: radar detector.. which one is the best?

Sorry SoCal, I have to disagree with you. The Escort is a superior radar detector and I'm not sure where you're getting your comparison results from but Road and Track, Car and Driver, etc., always put the Escort and V1 about the same. The V1 is not far superior and is definitely not worth the extra money. I agree the arrow system on the V1 is nice however, when one gets used to the way their radar detector operates, it becomes easy to tell where the radar signal is coming from. The Escort has very good rear signal pickup capability and I've never been pulled over from behind(that didn't sound right lol). Now if a cop sneaks up on you from the rear and you don't see him in your rearview mirror and he shoots you with his radar, I don't care of you have an Escort or V1, you're getting a ticket.

The Escort is one of the best radar detectors you can get and the V1 is not nearly superior enough to justify $300. We all have opinions right? lol

Re: radar detector.. which one is the best?

dpking44, I won't disagree that in the frontal testing that I've seen, the 8500 is equal to the V1 in detection and I wouldn't hesistate to buy one. I just think the locators are the main determining factor in the V1's favor. Basically, it boils down to an extra hundred bucks for the arrows and, as you stated, it's personal opinion that matters...
