6MT gear when parked

What gear do you leave your 6MT in when parked?

I don't, e-brake only. But I'm always parked level.

2 G or NOT 2 G, there is no question!

Re: 6MT gear when parked

First on bad hills, plus cut the wheel accordingly. My ebrake is a lil loose (I have to JACK it up on my parents driveway) so I tend to use 1st even when unnecessary. It is in no way a replacment for the ebrake though.

1st gear. Became a habit. Been driving stick for so long (20yrs? gee..im old) and had cars which had unreliable handbrakes so thats why. Once it's a habit, you'll also won't make the mistake of forgetting to put it in neutral when starting. It's automatic, you wont even think about it. Older cars that I had didn't even had the safety feature of needing to press the clutch to start the engine.

But you can put it in any gear.

Re: 6MT gear when parked

never used to use my e-brake on my old accord or any car...and always parked on what I thought was a flat surface...one day I came back and for some reason I got a call 5 minutes later from my apartment complex telling me that my Accord was blocking the exit to my complex. Forgot to put the e-brake on. Ever since then I've always put my car in 1st gear as well as set the e-brake. You never know when you're going to forget...better safe than sorry.

2nd, its a preference or a habit man, keep it in reverse if you want. Won't hurt the car unless you forget about it each time you start and release clutch.

Re: 6MT gear when parked

If I am parked facing down a hill, I'll use reverse. If I am parked facing up a hill, I'll use first. Either way, I am using the e-brake.

I remember reading (and hearing from brake mechanics) that using the ebrake on any car when parked is a good conditioner for the braking system.

I am not sure how valid it is, but maybe it does adjust the brakes a little in reference to the rotors?

On flat surface or parked facing uphill, put it in first gear, with e-brake on. If parked facing downhill, put it in reverse with e-brake on. As was already said, it's also a good idea to turn the wheels slightly so you would roll toward the curb if on an incline.

If your e-brake fails, or the cable is cut/ damaged, then the transmission in your selected gear won't allow the car to roll anywhere, nor can anybody push it.

That's why it's a good habit not to leave it in neutral when you park.

Re: 6MT gear when parked

I use second, somebody explained to me once that parking the car and putting it in to first is bad. I forget the reason why but it had something to do with that fact that you use first gear more than any other gear so it's probably worn in the most, and bla bla bla bla bla bla....... basically first is bad.

But one thing i did notice which was interesting, On F1 weekend in montreal, they close off Peel street (downtown) and allow all ferrarri drivers to park their ferraris so people can look at them.
It's pretty cool something like 20-30 ferraries show up. Anyhow, i looked at all the ferraries, and ALL OF THEM put their car in 3rd gear when they parked. I found this interesting.

Maybe they know something we don't

Either 1st or Reverse, whichever gear I'm going to use when I drive it next, + parking brake every time.

Re: 6MT gear when parked

i usually use first when i'm on a hill, but i stopped by the infiniti dealer the other day to get my tire pressure monitor sensors reset and when they were done with it, there's a small incline coming out of the service area. the guy parked the car with the e-brake and left the car in 4th. don't know..

also, when you guys put the car in gear to park, do you put the car in gear then turn it off? or turn off the car then put it in gear? or does it just not matter at all?
