G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
I curently own a '01 Audi S4. I am at the end of my lease and am considering buying out my lease. I drove the '04 G35 Coupe a couple of weeks ago and liked it. I know that these are very different cars but this is the only other car I would cosider at this time. I would apreciate any opinions any one has as to what I should do and why.
Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
I read it's not a good idea to buy out your lease. I don't know what your situation is, but just make sure you're getting a good price.
They're two completely different animals, the S4 and the G. Nobody can tell you; you have to decide. And asking here you're going to get biased opinions. If it were me, I'd like a little change of pace after driving the S4 for 3 years, but that's just me.

Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
I traded in a 2001 S4 for my G35 coupe. S4 was faster but heavier, it just didn't feel very sporty to me. The G35 obviously looks more sporty also. I am happy with my decision, I wanted a real sports car again that I could fix up and modify.
Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
I was faced with a similar decision when I bought my G35. I was thinking of buying a used S4 instead of a new G35. What turned me off about the S4 was I heard they had quite a few problems with electrical things and the turbos. The turbo issue was mostly from people who chipped their cars and blew their turbos, but it was causing Audi to get really pissy with the warranty. A German car out of warranty can get VERY expensive to repair and maintain. The S4 is a complicated and expensive piece of machinery that I didn't want to have to deal with repairing. Low maintenance and inexpensive parts are important considerations for me when I buy a car. The G35 fit that bill much better than a used S4.

Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
I'm a convert from Audi to Infiniti. I love the B5 S4 (the new one I don't like). It is very tunable, and the B5 is still a beautiful car. That being said, it is still a 3800lb pig with a **** poor weight distribution. The G drives much more like a sports car. A stock G will work a stock S4 on the track (road course). It is just so much better balanced. If you like straight line performance, the S4 is a better because it is a lot easier/cheaper to make fast. If you are more into handling, the G is the choice. The interior quality of the Audi is unquestionably superior, but nobody else makes an interior like Audi. The seats, however, are way more supportive in the G. The G should also be more reliable. As much as I like the S4 (and I'm still an Audi enthusiast not a Nissan/Infiniti enthusiast), there is no question in my mind that I made the right decision in getting the G.

Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
1. The new 2004 S4 will destroy the G35 at the track, on a drag strip, etc...
2. The 2 cars are completely different. One is a 4 door, heavy, awd, V-8, European sports (and luxury) sedan... The other is a 2 door, lighter,RWD, V-6, Japaneese "sports" (or luxury) coupe that costs a good $15-$20 grand less when fully loaded.
3. Why not consider an E46-M3 if you're going to consider spending that much money? It's more along the line of the G35... it's lighter than the S4, has 2 doors, rwd, Inline-6, and pulls like a **** up to 7900rpm's. This is a better comparison to the G35 IMO.

I have had Volkswagen products and Audis in the Past including Quattros. The Audi is a fun car to drive and these days has great lines. IMO though, for the long term, I am tired of dealing with all the electrical issues with these German cars. At this stage in my life all I want is basically a trouble free car sporty fun to drive car that I can enjoy and not have to take to the dealer for other than basic maintainace. For the short term, the Audi and Volks and even Mercedes & BMW are ok cars, however in the long run, I find them to be high maintanance.

Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
I too have a 2001 S4 - Nogaro 6 speed, with alcantera interior. My lease is up in several months. I too was going to buy the car outright. Hell, I even paid to have the timing belt and water pump replaced :/
But the longer I stay in the car, the more wary I get for forthcoming repairs. Add to that the car is dated in terms of looks.
I personally enjoy the heck out of the car, but in order to do so, I risk blowing the turbos and then having to invest at least 5 grand (if I'm lucky) to get it back running.
I've decided that the G35 coupe is to be my next car. It makes the most sense for my purposes. I'm looking forward to getting back into Japanese, this time with a lot more style and power. I will miss the torque of the S4. You just can't beat boost. I won't be spending my money on FI with the G35, I have a boat to buy.
To the other posters with various comments:
One would buy the 2001 S4 out of lease because it is a unique car that is no longer made and extremely tuneable. It's also addicting.
The B6 S4 is over 50 grands, which is a waste of money to me. $34 grand for a loaded G35 makes much more sense to me. The new S4 is not worth comparing to the G.

Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
Looks nice. Hopefully Audi delivers. VW/Audi always builds these great muscle machines but always over weight and end result is slower cars than competition. You have any data on how much the RS3 going to cost and when its' moving to state side?
Re: G35 Coupe or Audi S4?
Cookielover: I don't know that it will come to the states. The RS4 did not. They are bringing the A3 over next year but only in Avant form. If it comes, I would expect it to cost $35-40k. An Imola Yellow RS4 would be sick.
