6MT Guys - when does your engine lug?

On a test drive the tech at Infiniti flat-out said that any pinging I hear from my engine is strictly lug and that I need to shift at higher RPM. I was somewhat dubious but didn't really have any evidence to the contrary.

My engine definitely sounds like a damn diesel truck if i ever try to give it a moderate amount of gas with the rpm at 2000 or less, and I'm wondering if that's "normal" since I only have my own coupe to drive. How low can you guys run the engine before you encounter lugging?

I cruise a lot with mine at around 1500 RPM's and it's not lugging as long as the road is flat.

The dealer sounds like he's making excuses up so they don't have to fix a problem in your car until the warranty runs out and you have to pay to have it fixed.

The transmission makes that noise which is normal. Mine does it as well if I try and accelerate from a high gear in low RPM.

The engine shouldn't lug at anything over 800 or so unless youre trying to WOT

My engine has never pinged. I can lug the engine at about 200 rpm over idle.

2000 is definitely super high for it to be lugging. At the same time though, I've never gotten on it hard at that rpm, I always downshift before I step on it, it's pretty instinctive to me.

+1 and I haven't even met them yet...I cruise @1500 rpm even in 6th around 50-ish all the time. The engine won't lug down until 1200 rpm or less in 5th even, I've used it to get moving in snow when it's really bad out (with snowz).

He should check into the 0-60 mph test done in 5th gear (1:1) by moto-rags, you can literally start the car from a stop in 5th and bring it up to speed.

OP, I've been using cruise control a lot recently. Running 45mph in 6th it'll cruise at around 1500 RPM, I can hear it struggling just a tiny bit when I go up fairly steep hills (which is more than about 1/2 throttle without CC).

Steve, 0-60 in 5th gear... I don't think so man. You'd have to ride the clutch all the way up to like 30 mph just to keep the engine from dying - it's torture and a complete waste of time since *nobody* would ever replicate that. They do 30-50 and 50-70 in top gear (6th) from what I've seen to test real-world freeway acceleration without downshifting, but I only read Car and Driver. If MT or R&T is doing top gear 0-60 runs, I can kinda believe that though, as such a test would be just about as useless as those magazines are.

6MT Coupe
What octane pump gas you running? If it's not premium 91+, you'll def ping a lot if you have the 298hp rev-up VQ found in the 05-07 6mt's.

Only time I ping a little is on very hot days, low rpm's from a standing start, with moderate to aggressive accels on take offs.

Actually, it's much easier than it sounds due to the low end of the VQ. Clutch can be fully engaged around 13-15mph without lugging.

I've never heard of that being done in a G35. You would wreak havoc on the clutch and it's a pointless test in our cars.

It's kind of a cool thing how the Z06 can get to around 175 or so from a standstill in 5th gear though... but still doesn't mean a whole lot.

Ugh. I guess I'll try the other dealership around here. In the meantime I'm going to go get some techron and run it through the tank, see if that helps.

One thing I do know is that it definitely lugs less when the car is just starting up, and more once it's warmed up, not sure if anybody can deduce what's going on just from that.

Plugs, wires, cap, rotor MAF, throttle body, air filter, PCV, vaccum lines, fuel filter...
