(Keep in mind i do not have a g35 yet so i don't know first hand) The first 1 is on the 2006 g35 6mt i noticed that there is a silver dot or button on the tail light that pops the trunk right?? Well than can't anyone who sees that button open our trunks also?? (And the second question for all 6mt people everywhere) Is it better to turn your car off in neutral or in gear? does it hurt the tranny in any way or is there a reason to do one over the other?? thanks guys not too hard of questions here. Thanks guys. P.S. 77 days until i get my license back, then i'm gettin a G in that same week or day.

for that button on the back, your car has to be either on, or let the car know its you by pressing the unlock button.
Just turn it off when in neutral.

The trunk button only opens when the car is on or the doors are unlocked.
You can turn your car off in gear or in neutral. Both are fine, difference is if you turn it off in gear you dont' have to pull the e-brake cuz your car wont move, i think neutral is much safer because u dont wanna forget you left it in gear and then have ur car jump when u turn it on lol

I leave it in neutral. Mainly because the people who taught me did it. Also I have auto start, (disabled now) but i've heard stories of people leaving it in gear, auto starting it, and having it launch at something.
Amusingly enough, it was a friend of mine who works for infiniti who told me that. Said one of the workers kept clicking the buttons to try and locate the car. Ended up slamming into a FX45, almost crushing a mechanic!

I always leave my car in gear AND put on the e-brake because:
-Our e-brakes suck and are expensive to readjust; in gear serves as a second layer of safety
-I've always left a car in gear, so when I start the car, my first move is to put it in neutral, the put my foot on the brake and release the e-brake.
-I don't have auto start. If you have auto start on a manual you're just asking for problems.
-If you only put it in gear and don't do the e-brake, if you're on any sort of incline and you depress the clutch to start the car you'll roll

You should ALWAYS park your car in gear if it's a manual tranny. E-brakes are meant to be a safeguard and generally aren't the most reliable or forceful braking mechanism.... plus it's always good to have a second mechansim of stopping the car engaged, in case you happen to forget to use one of them(meaning you either forget to put it in gear, or forget to pull the E-brake).Originally Posted by eckoultd87

Your car can't jump when you start it up because the starter won't engage unless the clutch is pushed down... and even if it did, I'd rather run the risk of having the car jump as a result of my screw-up while starting it, than have it roll away and possibly hurt someone or damage the car itself while rolling away as a result of being parked in neutral with just the E-brake holding it in place. This is particularly true if you live in a hilly area.

I think he was referring to leaving it in gear, forgetting about that, then starting it with the clutch depressed and then immediately letting the clutch out, causing the car to jump.Originally Posted by partyman66

I'm sorry but this has only happened to me twice (IIRC) in all my years of driving. One of the two times was the other day when I just bought a beater Civic and it was so rubbery while in gear that I assumed it was already in neutral after I started to car so I let the clutch out.
This really should not be a concern and should not be a reason for people to take double precaution when parking a manual transmission car.

I am guilty of leaving my car in neutral when parked with only the e-brake but parking your car in gear is good practice. As earlier stated, the e-brake is not a very good mechanism to hold a car in place and is meant for emergency use, hence the name, emergency brake. It is not meant as a parking brake by any means. Leaving your car in gear will kind of lock it in gear and will not move unless the engine turns it. It will be harder for the car to move when in gear without the engine on. Plus, it'll be harder to steal. A group of guys may be able to push ur car with just the e-brake on. I've seen it happen. Sad sad thing.

but it's a free/simple double precaution.... why not take it??
i ALWAYS park my car with it left in the next gear that I will likely use (R or 1st, obviously) and use the e-brake

I left one "not" out of that sentence... felt like it was a double negative already and didn't proofread it Originally Posted by rob40wilson03

I meant that concern is not a reason for someone NOT to do both.

Eh I usually just use the e-brake, used to park my car on my inclinded driveway all the time and it never budged and inch (now my garage is finally cleared up). It's a good idea to start learning to leave it in gear though... as mentioned above but also if you take it in for any service they leave it in gear... my dumb *** forgot and just pop'd the clutch in like usual, let go, then slammed into a curb at about 4mph. Didn't do much but did flex the bumper enough to crack the paint tch.... Not to mention looking like a total tool.

FYI, Directed Electronics came out with a module to disable the autostart if your car was accidentally left in gear, just thought id throw that out there. They recently released it.
