Some advice for a soon-to-be G35 owner

Hey all, I just wanted to ask for some advice. I am not new to the hi-performance car scene...I currently own a 2002 Subaru WRX that's seen quite a bit of modification. I am ready for something a bit newer and nicer (and still under warranty!), so after looking around quite a bit, I've settled on the G35 coupe. I've got a few likely prospects in the Atlanta area, which I am planning to drive up and take a look at this weekend. Are there any specific things/problems that I should look for? I have read up on the oil issue, so I'm familiar with that. All the cars I am looking at are 6spd 2006 models (all have sports package as well) with anywhere from 16k - 25k miles. Prices range from $22k to $26k. Any input/advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It's a buyer's market, but I'm sure you already knew that. Focus on whatever options that you really want on the car, aside from that figure out how important color is to you. Navigation is a must-have for some, not for most of us. Mileage was important to me, I bought mine last year with 5,900. The reason I wanted extremely low mileage, even at a premium. I didn't want a ragged out car that was going to need new brakes and tires asap (even stock brakes and tires are around 2K to replace). Aside from that, buy, enjoy, post pics asap.

I think considering the car will have a factory waranty you don't have anything to worry about. Make sure the car wasn't hit or had paintwork done(carfax) and look for the best price.

If you're buying at a dealer you might want to ask them to do a pre purschase inspection if they don't already do that.

Looks like you are going about it the right way. I would say just make sure you get a color you can live with. Otherwise I think you will love the car. Good luck and keep us posted.

Welcome to the forums!

Im just trying to figure out what you get for $2000...LOL

Pads, you can get from ANYWHERE for less than $100...unless you have the Brembo's. they are the same pads used on the Z, Altima, etc. Tires you can get for less than $200 each. This isnt a Lambo so there arent any special tires that you need.

The dealer charges $2000 for pades and tires? What the...?

The dealer is EVIL and must be stopped, lol.

CarFax is a great start, but it doesn't show everything. Minor body work is unlikely to show up. Still, it's critical if you want to avoid a car that's had substantial work done.

Just got off the phone with the dealer I am going to see in Atlanta...they still have the 3 coupes I was looking at. I asked him if the price was negotiable, and of course he said no. My plan is to take an autotrader ad from one of the other dealerships in the area that has an 06 sport with 5,000 fewer miles for $3,000 less...hopefully that will motivate him to drop the price a bit. I would get the other one, but it's not the color I want and I figure if I'm going to drop $20k+ on a car I better get what I want. Either way I can't wait to get one

Agreed, carfax is not the only thing to look for but because everyone uses it is essential that it's clean otherwise you get ****ed when trying to sell the car in a few years.

I have a receipt from the dealership for something like 1678.XX from right before i bought it which was only for a service and 4 brand new tires. The rears were something like 339.00 each and the fronts were around 289.00 each. Obviously the dealership isnt the best place to do your work at, but i can see where the $2000.00 figure would come from for tires and brakes.

To be honest it would probably be even more than that for me there, but i've got the brembos too. It might be time for a big brake kit when time rolls around to replace my brakes next.

Needless to say the dealership is the most expensive place for everything. You can get everything done for at least half the price if not less buying the parts yourself and taking it to a shop or better yet a g35/350z specialty shop.

So...after driving 10+ hours today I am in the same state I was in at the beginning of the day...without a G35. All the cars I went to look at had something wrong with them. One of them was a smoker's car (not advertised as such), one had 3,000 more miles and numerous scrapes, scratches, etc, and the other one was just a POS (even had a CEL for crying out loud, not to mention gouges in the side walls of one of the tires). I would have gone for the second one if he had dropped the price, which was $25,500, but I wasn't about to pay that. Oh well, the search continues...

Edit: Update - Drove to Tallahassee today and finally found one!

So here's a rundown...completely stock, 24,9xx miles, 2006 sports package, $24,899. Only really noticeable fault was a ding in the driver's door, but it wasn't too bad.

So two days 1,000 miles, and numerous energy drinks later I finally found exactly what I wanted. I will be picking it up on Monday/Tuesday due to financing issues!
