Video Sears Point Raceway
Courtesy of our buddy Boones, we now have a full eight lap video, from a camera mount fabricated by Clint (THX723) and using a Canon GL2. It slipped a little bit left during the session and put the field a bit off center, but it still is reasonable quality. There is text overlay to describe some of what is going on, including some of my mistakes, and since we pass a couple of corvettes, and even lap one of them on the 2.5 mile circuit in just 8 laps, I thought you might get a tickle out of it. The link is now inserted in the body of the article describing the adventure.
For those who are interested, Clint and I will be going to the big track at Willow Springs on June 4th, and courtesy of Clint's generosity, we will swap the mount and each get some footage of that experience, one from his NA sedan and one from my FI coupe. Enjoy!

Eagle1, awesome vid and good kill on the vette. Two questions, what tires are you running and do you run with VDC on or off?

ATI Procharger with 7lbs boost.
Camera angle definitely needs to be wider. Next time I will widen it, then crop out the rear view mirror and dash along the top and bottom that otherwise intrude. That will also cut down on the vibration wiggles.
Tires are Toyo RA-1 at 30psi. 245/40/18 F and 275/35/18 R.

Re: Video Sears Point Raceway
Oops missed one question. Sorry.
I ran with the vdc on. Next time I will NOT do that. It was burping and grabbing at all the wrong spots, and was really a pain in the neck. especially in turn 2, 3, hairpin 7 and the final hairpin #11.
It was a safety and confidence issue. You work your way up the staircase one step at a time. I have been getting used to the breakaway of the rear end without the vdc, reading and listening to the car as it were, as the break out of the rear in oversteer is not at all bad (indeed it is good) but it is the confidence in knowing WHEN and HOW MUCH that matters, especially when you are going 80mph and there is a concrete wall or stack of tires in the equation. As you can tell from the video, there were a couple of spots where if you lost it, you were in a world of mangled metal and broken glass....so I opted for the conservative approach. Now that I have run the track, I would turn it off.
Other tracks are not so intimidating. Buttonwillow is flat, open and lots of run off space. You do not need it in my estimation. Laguna Seca....not so much space so probably run it a couple of laps with the vdc on...then if you get comfy you understand then turn the vdc off. I did it that way and wow it really helped to go faster and drift with some intent. And that is fun when there is space....but not with walls.

Superb narrative as usual. You could write for any car magazine and I'm surprised someone hasn't offered you a contributor position yet....or maybe they have. In any case, you carry the reader through the course with you so that they vicariously live the experience.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Video Sears Point Raceway
Eagle1- you're running a supercharger producing 425hp- did you do any modifications to the engine (aside the Nismo flywheel/clutch, ECU) prior to bolting on the SC? I'm considering one but frankly am wary of just bolting on any FI onto a stock engine. How did it affect your gas mileage? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

After reading some of his other posts, I don't think there is any magazine publication could afford to pay Eagle1 a comparable salary to what he currently makes. I think I remember a comment about being able to buy one G35 every month on his salary (or something like that). I also believe this comment was made in a thread where Z06ified was telling us he could afford to buy $150,000 Ferrari's, but chose the Z06 because he is frugal (kinda' smart no?). Excuse me if I'm wrong guys.

Re: Video Sears Point Raceway
The SC was in fact the very first mod. The ECU reflash at TS was the last one (so as to fully take into account what all of the other mods did to the a/f etc.)
The engine will take 425 hp without internal mods. I have 10,000 miles on the unit now, and so far (famous last words) not a single problem. The key is in proper and conservative tuning, and also driving the car responsibly and smoothly. That much hp and torque is stressful, and if you bang into the rev limiter and thrash and beat the motor, you may bend or break something, no doubt about it. But so far by staying disciplined and smooth on the controls, I get super performance when I want it, and street civility. The mileage is down about 1.5mpg from stock.
If I blow it up, then definitely I will go to some forged internals, lower compression pistons, like 8.5 to 1, and more boost, such that 450-500 rwhp would be the zone. But unless and until that happens, I am very happy right where it is.

Thanks for the info, Eagle1. I'm definitely going to consider the SC. I won't be racing it- this is more a mid-life crisis fun toy than anything but it sure has captured my interest. Did the SC void your warranty? I'm not concerned about the warranty issue but was just curious as to what your dealer felt about it.
Downloaded your video- that looks like a blast! I'll have to check and see if there's any raceways in Texas that offer instruction/racing for street cars (I could use a LOT of instruction!) Thanks again for the info!

DaBaur:
I have all my work done at Perf Nissan. If I took the car into an Infiniti dealer I think they would have a heart attack. The Perf Nissan lads have been great, they are not afraid of cars with mods, indeed they sell and install a lot of them. If it blows up, it will be my nickel of course. I do not think that Perf Nissan is doing any FI installations just yet themselves, but if they get to that point, I think it would be a good place to consider if you are in the area. Of course Grubbs Infiniti in Texas is the place to go if it is at all possible, because they do cover their SC work.
The warranty on all parts directly affected by the SC will be voided. That is as it should be, they did not make the warranty in the expectation that the SC would be part of the deal, so I have no problem with that. Depending on the dealer you can have the potential for problems with them attributing your parts failure to the SC which are not in good faith. For example, a problem with your stock exhaust and they say no coverage because you put SC on the car. There are dipsy doodles that will pull that on you, and all you can really do is get another dealer, because irrespective of your rights under the law to warranty coverage unless the failure is proximately related to the mod done, the cost in money and time is just not worth it to most citizens.
Not sure if my experiment in motoring is due to mid life crisis (52), but I can tell you that if it is.....I am traversing it at a much higher rate of speed than otherwise was accessible, so it is still worth it!
