Clutch Start

For all you lucky S.O.B.'s that have the 6mt alreeady do you know if you need to push in the clutch to start? I know that you dont have to in some or most newer BMW's and was wondering if the same was true for our cars since they are in the same class. thanx!

Re: Clutch Start

I haven't thought about trying to start it without the clutch, I'll try it and let you know...have to go grab a bite to eat soon anyway.

But, I really don't see how that would be useful...don't you (you personally) put it in first gear when you park? Without using the clutch to start, you'd either have to not park in gear, or take it out of gear (which you'd have to use the clutch anyway) before you turn the ignition. What would be the point?

Re: Clutch Start

SkylineR35 is right bro: In the M/T you need to depress the clutch fully before the engine will crank and start. In an A/T the selector needs to be in either P or N to start. In most cases after starting, you need to depress the service brake to select a gear.

Re: Clutch Start

Sure you can turn the engine off while in N. After turning it off tho, I was taught to select a gear to leave the car in and to apply the parking brake.
In the A/T car you can still turn the ignition off in N but will not be able to remove the key until P is selected.

Confirmed. Just got back from grabbing some food. Will not start without pressing the clutch.

Re: Clutch Start

Ok just wondering, I personally never put it in any gear when parked unless I am on a hill I dont see the point in doing that except i do know that a lot of people were taught to do it. E brake works for me. As far as the usefullness of not having to push the clutch in i can say it could come in handy sometimes. In my moms 4runner there is a clutch cancel button and it comes in handy when you dont feel like getting in the car to start it or starting it form the passenger side. And like i said BMW has it so i thought maybe Infiniti would have done the same. Either way it doesnt make that much of a difference cause I've never had a BMW so it's not like it will be something i will miss. Thanx for the info

Re: Clutch Start

haha skyline

on a Manual trans: i was taught to turn off the ignition while in neutral, then slip it into first, and do a slight handbrake...

on Auto: just put it in Park, no reason to keep it in neutral

Re: Clutch Start

What's the point of putting the handbrake on 1st gear?

Try parking your M/T car on a level road (so it doesn't roll) in first gear, but don't use the hand brake. Get out of the car and try pushing it. It won't budge much. It's like putting the car in "park".

Re: Clutch Start

So by putting the car in 1st gear you don't need to use the hand brake right? That would be the advantage.
