Great info and great post, this should be put in the Recalls section, so people are aware of the problem.

Re: Have ~10K on your 6MT? Read This!
great, now i'm paranoid about my transmission! there's been a few times when i've redlined it and when i tried to shift from first to second i heard a loud grinding noise before it shifted into gear. it doesn't happen very often, i think its happened around 5 times during the life of the car (approximately 10k miles). i just move my seat slightly forward and tell myself that it happened because i didn't push the clutch all the way down. is that what a missed shift is? what is that grinding noise and does it cause any damage? while driving casually my transmission doesn't make any noises out of the ordinary, it will click just as much as it does if i'm sitting in the driveway shifting gears with the car off. shifting seems smooth enough, although there is slight resistance in some places, but i don’t have anything to compare it too, how can i tell? i guess i’ll change out the transmission fluid (i didn’t think you had to do that with a manual transmission). i didn’t see a catch pan in the service manual, so how should i go about making sure I get all of the metal shavings out? Is there a magnet on the drain plug?

Aaron, that grinding noise is because you did not push the clutch in all the way when you made the shift. I do that sometimes when I wanna downshift from 3rd to 2nd (I like to do it fast and sometimes I shift too early, lol). Try to avoid it and it's not mandatory to change your fluid at 10,000 miles, but if your gearbox feels sticky and is not very willing to shift smoothly then you should do it. I have 10K miles on my car and my gearbox feels fine, so I am not going to bother changing the tranny fluid until the manual recommends it or the gearbox gets uncomfortably sticky.

hey MrElussive, thanx for the reply. i feel much better about my transmission now. i figured the grinding was from shifting wrong. i guess i read the words "10k miles", "clicking", "grinding", and "transmission", put 2 and 2 together, and started to worry about my transmission cus i didn't have anything else to worry about.
thx again,
