Have ~10K on your 6MT? Read This!

A friend of mine with a 350z had just recently hit 10K miles, at the time I was ~1500 behind him, still am now, but Im slightly over 10K. We were driving and he made a comment about how "notchy" his shifter had become, and at first, I had no idea what he was refering to. He let me drive the car for a few and I said "This feels no differnt than my G, same annoying level of resistance between every gear, same "clicking" when pulling into second from under 15 mph. Now, I always thought this was just hte car, but I took my G at 5,600 miles, he has had his car since mile 0. At first, he said, the shifting was as smooth as butter, but the gates were a little undefined. Now that hes put 10k on the car, however, he said the gates feel more defined, but the shifting feels resisted as well as significantly slower. I let him drive my car and his immediate reaction was "Yeah, yours is the same way." So he got his trans fluid changed about a day after that, and all he could talk about was how much better the car was. I hit 10k this past week, had my trans fluid changed monday (woulda had it done last week but our trans fluid is a special order item when you don't go to Infiniti dealers for service). All I can say is oh my god. Three days later I still feel like I'm driving a differnt car. Day one my driving went from smooth to shitty in a heartbeat, the car felt so much faster (not performace, shifting wise) and there were no annoying clicks or clacks inbetween gears. I've missed 5th twice in the past few days, and I'm not sure if its because the gates get that "undefined" feeling back, or because Ive been so much more "energetic" when driving my G. I saw the metal shavings that came out of his trans pan as well as mine....it was sickening. Mine was slightly worse, and I'd more than likely account this to the fact that I learned to drive stick on my G, however, he knew going in and was quite good at it, and his trans fluid still had quite a bit of metal floating in it. My mechanic said with this type of car, a 10K trans fluid change would be a very good idea, as our transmisison is built for performance, more so than most on the market. So, I know I've seen a few posts about it on here, all those of you with "notchy gear selectors" or "clicking noises when up against the wall at the bk drive through", get your trans fluid changed if you are around 10k miles. I can honestly say now, this car is amazing, but it's definatly a non stop process to keep it that way.

For all those that wanted to know, I went with 75w-90 GL4 synt in the tranny. I also had my rear diff fluid changed over to 80w-90 GL4 synth. Same story there. Good amount of shavings on the magnetic catch. Looks like our G is a metal shavings queen for the first 10k.

if you guys plan to change the fluid, i would recommend GM syncromesh friction modified. if you do a search in any forums about this stuff, you will not read one negative feedback.

This is the problem I posted about my car making clicking sounds sometimes when shifting!!! Nobody could answer me. I'm glad other people are having the same problems. It makes a clicking sound that's heard underneath the car when shifting at low rpm's.

I can sort of relate to this as well. You tend to get used to the car after having a while and the notchiness just became more obvious in this past winter for me. So I raised my concern and took it in around 13000 miles at the dealer, and guess what, they just gave me a new transmission. The moment I drove it home I just realized how this car used to shift. Awww.... So, I would recommend taking it to the dealer and see if you can get a new tranny for it.

i'm starting to feel the click when i'm going into 2nd gear, almost as if i'm grinding it in a little bit. it only happens sometimes.
i was gonna take it in during my 7500 mi. service, but i shud get it checked out sooner.

Did you reuse the gasket or get a new one for the diff and tranny? My Factory service manual mentioned something about using a new gasket.

Yes, you absolutely need to replace the fluid in an auto. I'm not sure what the maintenance schedule is for the auto as I have a 6mt, but I'm sure it is in the manual. It probably calls for a filter and fluid replacement at or around 25-30k miles.

Oh yeah, of course. I was just shortening my post by briefly summarizing the process. They ordered the tranny, and as I recall, I spent about 3 days with a loaner. And to recap on other topic posted before, even with the man tran problems, I still don't regret one bit of owning the 6 speed.
